I use weekly skills check off. Sometimes timed sometimes not. I also ask one or two topic related questions at the beginning of each class to assess what they have grasped and to see what needs to be retaught.

Other than quizzes, I use DB and IP projects to see if my students are actually incorporating new concepts into their projects. Students with poor attendance typically do not incorporate them in their projects.

Hi Dave, Yes, questioning sessions are often a more effective assessment technique than tests/quizzes. Susan

regular quizes can be intimidating to some students. I like to start class with time for them to ask me questions from the day before and then I will ask questions of them to form a discussion of what they have learned.

I use daily quizzes at the beginning of class that covers the material from the last class. At the end of class, I have students write 3 things they in that class period.

I prefer to use daily examinations, individual and group projects, I show them as they are in the course and how they can get better results.

Hi Amanda, Good examples of how to get feedback before adding new material.

This is what I also do at the end of each class. It also helps to see what students have been paying attention and also it will show the ones that have not.

I start the class with questions they have from the previous class. For my students that are more shy about speaking up in front of others, I ask them to email questions they may have and I answer them at the beginning of class.

I learned the hard way that implementing techniques that help to gauge students understanding of the concepts is essential. One strategy I use (as shared in a previous discussion) is creating question pods consisting of multiple choice and true and false questions that I ask the entire class to respond to at key points during the lecture. Engaging in this type of assessment enables me to: 1) determine if the students understand the concepts covered, 2) determine if I am conveying the information effectively, and 3) indicate areas where more attention is needed. In the end, taking the time to apply this type of assessment improves the knowledge acquisition and sharing activities during the class session.

Daily quizzes seem to bear well with my students that can quickly memorize but i find it more important to use the time to review and answer questions rather than give my memorizers another A

I tend to use the formative evaluation process as it is used to inform students of their progress.

I have used crossword puzzles and other assorted handouts to help me assess my students. We go around the classroom one by one so everyone has to do it. I'll read the question and see if they know the correct answer. I always do it the day after the lecture. It gives me a better idea what they remember and areas I need to help them. I can tell by the speed of their response, and the confidence of their response, whether they know the subject matter.

I like to review the day before material by asking questions on the earlier material. The knowledge in sequenced in progressive order. By asking questions, it allows me to see if the understanding is there. This gives me confidence that its ok to continue. I like the idea of daily quizzes as well as many students dont feel comfortable answering quesitions in front of class.
