Hi Veronica- Thanks for your post to the forum. You are doing a great job at checking the pulse of your students at regular intervals. This avoids having them get too far off track before we realize that they are lost. Great work! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I quiz the students half way though the lecture, then I give an assessment evaluation each week. They are evaluated with exams, quizzes, midterms and finals

What are some formative evaluation strategies you can use to assess students?

For my on-ground courses, I use quiz, individual and team assignments, as well as mid-term exams.

For my online courses, I use graded discussion board questions (DQs) or (DBs) as well as graded individual weekly summaries - depending on school; individual research papers, and group projects. In addition, for some schools, I use individual team evaluations in which team members rank each other on activities and contributions - on a scale of 1-5 using a form.

Hi Tonia- Thanks for your post to the forum. Having your students participate in some interactive questioning is an excellent idea! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

quiz after topic works well to see how much student has retained.
divide class in groups and have questions asked to each other and see what type of questions they can come up with.

Several types leap to mind. In cases where the student is to have a record of his/her advancement/mastery, quizzes, chapter tests, essays, and teamwork or group games can be effective forms of formative evaluation. In cases where I want to assess local mastery of recently taught concepts guided discussions, individual conferencing, and reflective journaling are strategies I've used to good effect.

I believe it depends on the class. If you can offer tests or quizzes, it's a great source of feedback. Otherwise, short written assignments work very well also.

Hi Tisha - Thanks for your post to the forum. Your lesson plan does a great job of getting your classroom involved in active learning. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

One evaluation strategy that I find really helpful is to show a film that fits the lesson, have a class discussion and then have students write an essay. It tests how well students listen and how they apply knowledge.

Hi Ron - I hope that you will find the One Minute Paper useful! Have a great day!

I use open discussions and classroom exercises both in learning group format and individual effort format. I like the idea of the 0ne minute written exercise and plan to use that in my classes in the future.

Hi Adrienne- Thanks for your post to the forum. You are wise to review before moving on to new material! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I like to have teams create questions as well. I find the students often create much harder questions that truly challenge the other teams to do well. It becomes motivating for all.

I like to use a quick question/answer review session to get things started. This helps me to see what students retained material from the day before and which ones were daydreaming. If you have a class that volunteers to speak it is awesome but I frequently find I have to use the old law school socratic method. From there a simple quiz, quick write were you have them write for example three things they learned from the day and three questions they had.

I usually use daily quizzes to review the prior lesson to make sure they grasped last weeks session. If they do poorly then I like to review the chapter again and answer the most missed questions.

Hi Jill - Thanks for your post to the forum. I'm glad that you mentioned that you use "checkpoints" for larger research projects. This is really important because as we all know, our students have busy lives and can easily fall behind and then be overwhelmed by a looming deadline. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

At our campus, 15% of the student grade is "class participation". The formative assessments can be used as the class participation grade. The formative assessments that I use include quizzes, in-class assignments, practice handouts, and homework assignments. I also use check points for longer research assignments. The checkpoints include the outline and annotated bibliography to ensure that the student is on-track. All of these formative assessments help me to pace the instruction and to identify students who need extra help. They also help the student to determine how he/she is doing.

We use quizzes where I work but also more informal questioning of the class. I try to get some of the non-responders involved in discussions & questions to assess a general knowledge of the class.

Hi Jerri- Thanks for your post to the forum. I really like that you usr the info you get from the "pop-quizzes" to tweak your instruction - we all need to take direction from our students! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career, Susan

I use unit quizzes to assess how the students are progressing prior to doing the full chapter test. Also, I give pop-quizzes which I may or may not count as a graded test. If I am unsure of how the class is absorbing the info I collect the pop-quizzes to use as a guide for reinforcement of learning.
