I do this as well. having the students break into teams and create questions for the opposing team to answer.

Hi Michael-Thanks for your post to the forum.Short papers certainly assess higher order thinking skills than do T/F or multiple choice. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I like a course that gives students lots of assignments that require the students to demonstrate what they have learned. These can be short papers, quizzes and exams. But I prefer short papers where students answer a few questions (3-6), to determine how well they understand the material.

Hello, Reid,
I think this is a super idea. Students, when creating quizzes, reinforce their knowledge, and debate may arise among them as they figurre out what the questions are, how to phrase or frame them, and whether the answers they offer can be backed up by what is in the text, lecture content, demo, etc. Bravo! --Gary O. I usually use a mix of asking questions throughout the lecture, going over the material in a discussion format at the end of class, and using the tests and quizzes to help form assesments

test and quizes help to show the student how well they are doing on topics. If they are struggling- it will show and if they see it on a quiz they can ask for help before the big test is given so they can understand all information that is suppose to learned

Quizes, graded in class assignments of application of the lecture, group discussions, group and individual projects

I really like the idea of using feedback sessions - not only can the students sit down and take a moment to evaluate their work on a frequent basis, but this can also spur on additional discussion and opportunities to take the content out of the classroom and into possibly real world scenarios and life experiences for validity.

Quizzes and tests.

usong test an quizes aloow instructor to evaulate students progress in recalling new information

I like the use of answering a predetermined set of questions after the lecture or classroom exercise.

I use test and quizes. My students are industry specific Information Technology. I keep my quizes short and to the point. I also use hands on lab exercise as a part of the test and or extra credit. Most of my students are visual learners.

By quizzing students throughout the course, both the student and instructor can see how the student is progressing through the course.

I like to have the students take exams to stress the important material. This also lets me know what I need to spend more time covering. I do give many exams through the quarter and use different types of exams...multiple choice, essay, fill in the blank.

I teach interior design and the students do projects and these projects show their understanding of the subject presented.

Hi Steve- Thanks for your post to the forum. as you mention, especially in career education, the bottom line is whether our students can demonstrate that they can apply what they have learned. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Obviously tests and quizzes, but also is the "show me" principle. How well you are able to perform a given task after perhaps several tries is a way to see progress and for them to see for themselves where they may need help and guidance.

Hi Debra- Thanks for a great example of how to give effective feedback in the online environment! Susan

The strategy for creating formative evaluatiuon is through the feedback to my students when assessing their assignments. Since I am on online instructor and we do not have quizes or exams, we rely on papers and projects to gauge student learning. To do this, in the feeback, I incorporate three main parts to my discussions in the feedback. First, I provide an overall evaluation of how well the student meet the objectives of the assignment. This discussion will lead into the second element of the evaluation, a discussion on the areas in which they need improvement, areas in which they want to maintain, and most importantly, suggestions on how to make the improvements. The class element is a overall evaluation of use of research, formatting standards, spelling/grammar, mainly the mechanical aspects of their writing, including suggestions on how to make those improvements, as well. Lastly, I often make comments about how they did with this assignment compared to the last. When good, it should be mentioned, so the student see that you are really gauging their performance and care about them and want them to succeed.

I also use tests. I teach in an automotive tech school. My students need to read and do some math. We have a lot of web based factory traing as web based service manuals. If they cant read well they will have a hard time keeping up.
We Use pre tests to evaluate where their traing needs to be.
