I use a variety of test styles in class. I am allowed the freedom to use differnt test styles.

It depends on the course and the learning objectives for the course. If the course requires mastery of specific vocabulary terms, I may use a matching or completion test. However, if the course involves report writing, I will need to incorporate some short answer or essay questions.

the criteria for test format .... I prefer the Multiple choise questions.

The criteria that I use to select the questons for the material are almost come in the textbook CD. I select the Mul;tiple choise questions so I can incorporatethem to my exam program.

The Multiple choise questions are more reliable for the material I teach.

i love to use completion form

I dont have the option of using my own testing format however I do have an option of developing practice tests. Since the school uses a lot of mulyiplr choice and true false, I may choose short essay or completion formats.

Depending on my students baseline assessments has a significant impact on the formats that will be selected.

Most of my lectures are two hours each day. Students are asked to jot down at least two questions per lecture and distributed throughout their classmates to answer. The questions become questions used as pop quiz questions for the week.I use powerpoints often and embed questions in approxomately every four frames. I feel this helps the students retain the information better. My test are all premade and they are all multiple choice questions. On ocassions, I send home essay questions for the next day.

Criteria for testing formats vary depend on the type of info you want to gather. You can use the socratic method to teach problem solving skills.

I believe that using the same type of exam each time is not a good choice. Just as every students learns differently, there preference of exam may also vary. Also, it depends on the course material.

my students jobs are troubleshooting so i chose multiple chose test and practical

Hi Monir, Thanks for sharing a great example of effective assessment. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I agree. I us a varity of diferent tests depending on what I am teaching.Sometimes I will also combine different test style in one test.

It depends on the class type and skill sets that I want to test. If it is a skilled based career class I would want to make sure it was assessing the application oof knowledge required for the discipline and support any licensing or certification exams to be taken in the future.

I usually have some kind of an assessment done in my classes every week to gage the student’s comprehension of the material. In each class I start with a summary of objectives related to the course from the last class and then do a quick test with only 4-5 questions with short answers, which makes it an easy measuring stick. These tests give me general information about where the students are and where we need to do a little more work so that they are able finish the course successfully. In first Pattern Drafting class, I gave 7 questions that required either a short answer or True/False; I gave it on the first day of class as an open book test, to use it as a base for each of the students. Every week, we have quiz pertaining to the material that they have just learned this process takes about 10-15 minutes but it is really helpful for the teacher as a tool to gage the classes’ understanding of the subject.

I do not get to pick testing format.I do plan on bringing up to the adminstration that i would like to be able to rewrite the test.

It really does depend on the course material, however I prefer to use the short answer version for a couple of reasons. One is I feel it requires the students to comprehend material instead of recalling it from memorization. I also feel it helps the students who study for the test and truly pay attention versus the students who do not study or expect the information to be given to them.

I am mostly involved with the clinical aspect of the course so we mostly do skill applications, I will say that these tests are very challenging to develop and to grade. The grading part is the most challenging because there are several instructors that give the tests. We as instructors have to discuss ahead the criteria we are looking for so everyone is on the same page. This helps to make it a more reliable assessment but it certainly isn't perfect In the classroom courses,we are able to use a variety of testing formats, mostly multiple choice and true/false because they can cover a wide range of the instructional objectives and can be more valid and reliable.

In my situation I don't get the freedom to select test formats for grading but I will be using some of the test styles in this course will be helpful as I try to gauge my students' comprehension.

the material dictates format. if teaching a computer application, hands-on tests are required. when teaching accounting or some information-based class, i choose a combination of multiple choice and problems.
