When selecting a testing format I first think what I want the student to be able to do. This goes back to the objectives of the course and what level the objectives are written at.
If I am trying to test at the analysis or synthesis level, a multiple choice question is going to be relatively hard to produce. However, an essay question will be easier to produce but harder to grade.
For my studio class, I would like to use skill application tests. It is good for the students to check that they are ready for the real world. For lecture class, I like to use multiple choice questions. However, after this class, I will use mix of different tests such as true/false questions and short answer test. It is a good lesson.
I don't get to chose my own format. My personal preference, is a mix of all to meet the needs of all students.
Our testing driteria are prescribed for us, but I do try to employ some of the other methods discussed during my reviews and during lecture.
Sometimes I use standardized test from my computer base to test the students. I have found that I disagree with the instructor's questions or focus. I am presently learning how to construct my own multiple choice/matching/T,F exams with the goal of making the questions understandable to the students. I have noted that sometimes the questions are worded in "another language" which doesn't help the students at all.

It depends on what we want them to learn. If they need to learn a procedure or a skill, they would be tested through a practical. Critical thinking is most often tested through multiple choice questions.
Testing content is based on preparing them for their licensing exam after they graduate. A variety of testing formats is used to increase retention of learned knowledge. Based on student learning style, I would assume that it applies to testing style as well. Proving a variety of testing formats via freqent quizes and end of class final exams should be beneficial.
all are test are done at the corps level we have very little say in what type of tests are used the nine years I have worked here little has changed other than up dating information
My students are tested on both performance and multiple choice style testing. Being a trade college this seems to work well.
I use a variety of "testing" methods, ranging from in-class discussions/written responses to material summaries to multiple choice quizzes to true and false exams. I arrange assessments around the content in a format that causes a need to use information from each section once, then I test factual knowledge in a mid-term and final exam. Of course, the finalized assessment format for each course can change according to the needs of different classes, etc.
I prefer students to prove their expertise, i use a variety but also incorporate some kinesthetics.
I use multiple choice tests that are provided for me by the school.
I also combine the different test styles in my tests.
I also use various test forms in my class. The feedback from student is that True and False are the least liked.
Hi Sean, That is a great mix of assessment options! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

In my current position they only let me use multiple choice, but I personally prefer essays.

I like mixing true/false, matching words, fill-in-the blank, and small essay questions together in a test. It combines a broader level of content knowledge for the student to effectively answer. I will immediately recognize whether the student has read, understood, and participated in the class material.
My selection would depend on what I am testing for; for instance, if I want to assess the students overall understanding of course content, I would use a multiple choice. If I am more interested in assessing how the student is able to apply the content learned, I would prefer to use the short answer or essay format. My students are however, required to memorize facts and figures, so I do utilize completion and some matching formats also.
We are bound to our tests but how we deliver our information can change. We do have many formats we can use for our hands on training.
