Using Simulators in Assessment

In the System Support program which involves troubleshooting and troubleshooting being an important part of each course we begun using simulators in the lab. We have not used a simulator for testing but I am thinking about using it for the first time in assessment of the course.

Hi Robert, Thanks for your post to the forum. That "Hands-on" skills application is essential! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Simulations work great to see how a student applies his or her knowledge in the real world. Automotive instructors have used simulations for years .Having test cars that you can put a problem in and then let the student test his knowledge is an invaluable way to evaluate the student ,the instructor, and the program.

From the medical perspective, simulators have become one of the standards for testing. We can develop a real world scenario, insert it into the simulator and then have the opportunity to step back to better evaluate how the student adapts and applies their knowledge. From our perspective, this can be done with out risk to actual patients.

I'm presuming you are talking about computer system support. Simulators appear to be a great way to test knowledge of trouble shooting. Good assessment tool.
