learning

As educators, learning in ongoing. Should we be looked down upon if we are unable to answer a specific question. I am aware that no one knows everything. But working within todays society people are judgmental, especial to those that have titles.

Yes, as an educator we need to keep current with the material we are teaching. But I have had questions that I am not able to answer in class at times as well. I do not think we should be looked down upon in this business of education. I tell students all the time I am human. The best is to come back to the studnet and say I will research that question and come back the next class with an answer. I feel with judegement there is no way to get away from this point. Some peeople are always narrow minded and beleive their way is the only correct way

I tell all my classes that I don't know it all, and that there are things from earlier in my career that I don't remember.

Jennifer,
this is so true & they really do want to learn so we need to make every effort to find the answer & get back to them.

This is a great answer John, I am occasionaly asked a question I am unsure of and I do the research and always get back to them. Students definitely remember if we do not get back to them with the answer. That is when we lose the credibility.

Christine,

yes, as instructors we should truly be life-long learners & inspire our students through our actions this way.

I believe that once you stop learning about your subject you are being close minded.

John,
and this gives us another opportunity to demonstrate to our students how to be wise consumers of the information that is available & out there.

Great question. I have found some classroom success by letting the students know when I don't know the answer to a question, but that I will definitely find the answer, with them preferably, and at that same time if possible. Students tend to respect that approach because they are aware that no one can know everything, and you respect them enough to be completely honest with them, and still end by finding/ giving them the answer.

Tameeka,
yes we need to make sure that we are staying engaged with both our fields of expertise as well as the educational field. This will keep us fresh & exciting in the classroom.
