Since we use dry erase boards, I try as much as possible to use multicolor pens.

Since we teach audio production, music is incorporated into the curriculum.

Although using non-standard learning techniques in standard classroom environments is something people shy away from - it is to their students' detriment. Research has proven that using certain, colors, scents, environments, techniques, will maximize a students ability to learn. To ignore these facts flies in the face of reason.

We have limited space in our lab classes, and most of the wall space is used by equipment. I like to move the lecture tables into different shapes every once and a while (v-shaped, side-by-side, short rows). It encourages students to sit in a different part of the lab or with people they wouldn't normally sit with.Power point slide shows with bright pictures of the same projects the students will be working on gets them excited about the day's work as they wait for class to start.

Sharron,
Thank you for the great advice regarding colors. This was something I had not thought about before but definitely can use this.

One of the many things I learned about learning handicapped students (elementary level) was that if you allow them to pick a large piece of colored construction paper (they chose the color) to cover the top of their desk, it helps calm them and helps them concentrate. With my first degree in art education I well know the value of color on the emotions. As a librarian, I see how decorating the library with different colored seasonal ornaments enhances the value of the library as a study center. I've already noted that classical music plays in the library because research shows that it improves memory.

Tony,
Great job of using a wide variety of materials/mediums to help your students learn. I think this also helps show that you don't have to have a huge budget to be able to do these things.

Besides using color paper when giving handouts, I find that using different color dry erase markers to emphasizes a word or saying, helps students remember what the important parts of what they are learning. With creative supplies my class uses color pencils, markers, paint, glue, magazines, various mediums to implement the final project. My class is always reviewing what is out their in popular culture to better understand graphic design, and advertising. Music is so important in helping with the concentration of the students and I can tell it helps them be more productive.

This is a good idea. Also if you're helping students with brainstorming methods, using sticky notes & flip chart paper is a great multi-sensory activity.

We could add color, visuals and creative supplies to help improve the learning environment by letting the students post their projects on the walls of the classroom.

I think this is a great idea. And also good job on looking for these opportunities. Some in the culinary arts would be content to say it's already multi-sensory, but you are pushing for more! Great job!

As a Chef instructor I believe the use of culinary posters encourages learning and entusiasm. The posters are done in a way that they group certain food groups or animals, providing a quick picture of a lot of information. This visual aids help the student feel more close and familiar to the ingredients he/she is working with.
