Music in a classroom
Music is not usually allowed in our classrooms. However, I find it motivates them during cleah-up at the end of class, and it gives them something to look forward to and they are relaxed when it plays.
I would love to use music in the classroom. It is against policy. I really think it would increase retention... What to do?

I think quiet soft music helps create a enviroment that is therapatic to learning
Even though I do not use music in my lecture class, I do use it in the lab. I have seen for myself that in the lab it motivates them and even helps in a team type of workmanship. I t makes the students more energetic and they have fun during the time in the lab.

Similar situations have come up in my experiences and when the students have headphones on I find it difficult to believe I have their full attention. I play music for the whole class to enjoy and experience.

I would say you are right in this situation. If music is used in the classroom it should be a "shared" experience by the whole class, not students listening to music while you are lecturing.

Some of my students listen to music from their cell phones via ear plugs during lecture. They say it helps them relax and concentrate. I say "put your phone away and unplug." I'm not sure who is right here.
Music can be very effective in encouraging a peaceful environment; also a corner area with the color of light lavender or purple. Together the music and color can calm even the most disruptive student.
I personally like the idea of the use of music in the class room. However, it has been frowned upon at my campus.I am hoping that after this maybe it will be excepted. Instrumental, soft music to me creates a calm, motivating enviroment.
