Lecture Notes are very important for presenting an effective and organized lecture. If the instructor teaches the same course a number of times, alot of the information will become second nature to the instructor and reviewing the notes will take a shorter time period. Kecture notes help the lecture stay on task, on topic, and on time.

Importance of Lesson Plans

It is extrememly important to prepare good lesson plans and always prepare for the unexpected. It is better to have too much to cover than too little. Extra material can always be saved to cover at another time.

Who is your audience?

It is very important to know your audience. This helps in a variety of ways when you teach a course, but it also makes the students feel more comfortable when you ask them questions they know the ansewrs to: what is their prior experience, what are their hobbies, etc.

Guided Note Taking

I have done this with my students for a few years now, and I did not even know it had a name! I find it keeps the students interested to find out what goes in the blank.

Review AFTER a test

I find this to be very effective. After a quiz, I collect and grade them, and then I hand them back to the students and we orally review the quiz or test. I find it really reinforces the information and makes the quiz a very valuable learning tool instead of just a grading tool.

Different Learning Styles and intelligence

I never knew about the 7 forms of intelligence, and that we usually have 3. Now that I read about it, it makes sence and I immediately recognized my 3 forms of intelligence.

Learn by Seeing

It is so important that as culinary instructors we teach our students by demonstration. We now know why-students only retain 25% of the information they hear, yet 40% of the information they see.

Memory Retention

I find that allowing the students to prepare a 3x5 card with notes for a test works well. By studying enough to prepare the 3x5 card, they usually end up not needing them because they have retained the information.

Learning Activities

I find that it is important to keep students involved in the learning process. During lecture, i still try to have at least one exercise that they can et involved and feel as though they are actually part of and in charge of their learning experience.
