Learning styles
I feel it is best to use all styles within each hour of lecturing. Any feedback on this?
I agree you should use all learning styles to make sure you reach all students.
Hi Richard!
I always like to hear what strategies instructors use when engaging students with different learning styles. Please share some of them.
Thanks and keep up the good work!

I try and use as many different styles as possible as often as possible.
i have observed that students lear fast by images and peripheral learning with colors
I have noticed that many students are visual learners. When i go over a lesson and i am not sure everyone understood the topic, i will bring them out to lab and show them, and then let them perform the task. They seem to get it after actually performing the task themselves.
I find most of my students learn on the kinesthetic and visual plain. I try to describe (lecture) on the activity of the day and then put them right to the task. As I ambulate the room I then will have opportunity to discuss, challenge and assure the learners using other learning techniques.
I agree Lisa,
In every class there are students with different learning styles. In any teaching environment (online or oncampus) I give demonstrations and provide critical thinking and reading comprehension exercises. In oncampus classes a majority of learners are visual whereas in on-line classes students generally learn better by participating in the "Chat" sessions (hearing) or by actually doing what is required as per the assignment instructions. In conclusion, facilitators must be cognizant of all styles of learning when teaching.
Most of my class is hands-on. In my kitchen I lecture, demo and then they make it. Its all about visual, touch and smell. I will draw on the dry erase board a diagram of slicing a cake, for example. I will talk about it then I will demo so they will visualize it in their head first and then they will actually see it. I find that they retain the information better when they see it twice.
I agree, there are so many different learners in our classrooms it can be difficult to effectively teach all styles.
Yes I agree. I do believe that students learn in many ways and we need to determinie what learning method works best for the student.
I agree!! I feel that I need to address the multiple intelligences, & styles of learning to keep all the students interest. I especially feel the need to perform a state of change when I feel that I may be losing a student. I will try to engage them if I see a few "dozers", to get them up, change the sound if anything.
I totally agree with you I know in the area that I teach we have so many different types of learners that it si important to make sure you hit them all. And many students many have several ways they learn best.
I agree that it is best to address all learning styles when lecturing. I find that having my students take notes is very helpful. I take the time to cretae the notes on various topics that I feel are important. I them present this info via projector onto a smartboard. The feedback I have received from students is that having to write down notes helps them to learn better than if they were viewing power point. For those who are visual they get to see the information as they need to write it down. For those who are auditory they get to hear the information as it is being presented. It is a little challenging for the kinestheic learner because I don't have access to materials that would provide hands on learning in my subject . My school does not provide a lab setting which would be perfect for the hands on learner, so this does prove to be a drawback to adddressing all learning styles. I do incorporate visual aids for various anatomical structures whenever possible. Some of the kinesthetic learners have given feedback that this is actually helpful to addressing their learning style.
Hi Tammy!
I like to pair students with different learning styles for discussion for making remarks to the class. It is always interesting to me how their learning style impacts their views. Have you found this to be true as well?
Good job!

I also believe that it is best to use all styles each time one lectures. It is easier to incorporate each style when my class period is 90 minutes long compared to my 50 minutes lectures. I use visuals, music, lecture, and group work.
Hi Alphia!
I, too, am visual and I find that no matter the learning style most students connect with a visual instructor. I try to make it fund for students.
Keep up the good work!

I am a visual learner so i tend to teach that way, everything for me is visual , a video, hands on demonstration or pictures, so i incorporate all into my classroom and clinical lab.
I agree on using all styles in an hour-if-the class if long enough. I love Block scheduling and longer class periods so I can have the time to accomplish utilizing all learning styles.
I feel that touching on all the learning styles is important. Then maybe after you get a good "feel" for your class, maybe you can adjust the style to use more of the type of teaching that will work with that class.
