It's very helpful to have a 'last-class review' within the first 10 minutes of the next day's class.

Yes and I have found this to be very useful in establishing relationship in the course content from class period to class period.

student first

Andrew,
yes, the review is a great way to make the connections from previous content to the new material.

Having a review about the last day is a great idea, this will also help get the students out of the reptilian brain activity. This has helped me greatly in the past.

Thomas,
this is very true & we need to allow this as this can help them focus & concentrate so much better.

I have noticed this also helps the students get aimed at the course work, time to let whatever they came into class with on their brains to be expunged.

This is very helpful especially if the material being reviewed will directly influence the current lesson or project. It will allow the student to feel what they are learning is relevant plus it will help them trust how you've structured the class.

Robert,
and this also helps provide the connection between the familiar material & the new.

Paul,

That sounds like a very good practice. The old saying, "you can expect what you inspect" fits your practice. You are not just throwing information at students and moving on. By conducting a review of previous material, you are letting the students know the concepts you expect them to know, spending a few minutes warming up their "engines" with a review, and accomplishing an informal assessment. Sounds like a lot of good accomplished in the first 10 minutes of class!

Rob

Paul,
yes, I completely agree. This type of review helps solidify the recent learning & also is a great way to set the stage for that class' learning.
