Maintaining Eye Contact

What is the value of having eye contact with students?

Eye contact acknowledges that the student is a part of the class. It also keeps students focused on the lesson plan.

I believe that eye contact is very important in the classroom. It helps develop a connection with each and very student. However, in many of my classes, my lectures are done with students grouped around me at a table as I an demonstrating and giving out handouts. Some of the students are behind me and I sometimes feel that I am not having as much eye contact with them as with the ones in front of me.

Maintaining eye contact is important... it conveys that you are knowledgeable about the topic of discussion. Having eye contact with every student shows them they are involved in the discussion.

I feel that is important for the quieter students to know that they are just as important as the more vocal students. You can show this by maintaining eye contact with all students.

Everyone loves to be a part of "something." Looking directly at a student 2-3 seconds makes them feel as though you care. It can also help you read their expressions.

As a teacher making brief eye contact with the students, one at a time, is most important since it is a jester that the teacher cares about them. The students feel that the teacher is paying individual attention to each of them. Also, it is a jester of respectfulness.

Students are people. They want to be acknowledged and treated with respect. In this and most cultures, brief eye contact is one component of relaying this. In a classroom, successful communication and comprehension are crucial. In martial arts and the military, an auditory response is required of students/soldiers to confirm the message has been received. In an ordinary classroom, more subtle methods are used and simple eye contact usually does the trick.

Not only does good eye contact help acknowledge and make the student feel a part of class, it also connects me with them on a personal level. They actually feel I'm truly having a conversation with them and they feel important and acceptance.

Having eye contact with students is important, because you can show them that you are paying attention to them, let them know that they are included in the conversation, and that you acknowledge what they are saying. Eye contact also allows you to read whether they understand the material or not, especially if they are giving a look of confusion.

Making eye contact with students lets them know you are engaging everyone. It signals a direct connection without calling a name or pointing. Students feel connected to the instructor through eye contact and that the instruction is specifically for them. Eye contact is a way of acknowledging that they are part of the class and that you respect them enough to make sure you 'connect' with them individually.

It's a non-verbal form of communication that helps convey the message.

I strive to make eye contact with each of my students to engage them in the discussion. I believe it shows them that I "see" them and invite their participation. I want each of them to be involved and feel that they are a part of the class discussion. It is important as an instructor to pay attention to who is paying attention to you.

Eye contact is important because it's a connection with the student and gives nonverbal cues whether the student is understanding or unsure of the concepts taught.
It is one of my goals to make eye contact with each of the students and not hold it too long; the 2-3 second information was a helpful guide for me.

I find I get a better connection and smile out of the recognition. They sometimes then participate more with a follow up remark.

For me eye contact let's me know that the student is engaging me as I speak about an important topic and each student is listening and engaged to what I'm speaking about.
Hopefully my points are getting across to the student.

To me eye contact is important,because it tells me how much they are engaged in my lecture and some student likes to have an eye contact so that way they expres their interest,and stay alert.

I agree...An effective teacher should always establish rapport with their students. Establishing interpersonal relationships with students is crucial to form a trusting bond with each student. establishing eye contact to acknowledge each person in the classroom is important to the relationship.

I think it makes them more comfortable. They don't feel as though I'm reading off a paper.
