Learning groups

Through this course I have come to appreciate the effect that placing students in groups can do to help contribute to how effective students are in class and also helps in building bonds with students.

Hi Geraldine!

I like to remind myself that every student is the same but different and they are diffenrent for a reason. Getting to know our students as much as possible can ofter head off the challenge with the "slacker".

Keep up the good work!

Hello Stacey,
Yes I agree with the one slacker that does not do anything and I always find a way to give that student a specific job to do.
They need to be involved so I make sure that I step in and give them their job.
Aloha,
Geraldine

My experience with group activities is that there always seems to be at least one slacker and that ticks off the rest of the group.

Hi John!

I really like this approach much better than having "group projects" where there is always the concern that every student will not pull their weight. The weekly group encourages team work and reenforcement of current topics discussed during class sessions.

Good job!

A teacher should strive to use learning groups at least once a week. Some students learn better by talking over the concepts with fellow students.

Learning groups allow students to resolve issues and problems.

In group sessions, students realise that other points of view are acceptable and are not necessarily wrong because it is different from their own.

I teach accounting and I have found groups to be a good way to reinforce learning. I give each group a problem to work through and then after their group time, they share how they worked the problems for the class. That way all groups see all the problems.

I agree Isiah! I had never before considered the rapport that could be created by keeping the same people in the same group. I think that it would be great to have that in a training group to get employees to get to know each other.
