Why Group Learning is important.
I think splitting students up into random groups is a great way for students to get to know each other and hear the opinions and ideas of other classmates that they may not normally connect with or socialize with.
Bee,
Definitely true that the groups can often help students by allowing them to hear the material from another's perspective rather than always from me.

Groups are a great tool to use because when an instructor is lectureing a subject some student my not understand it at frist, but when another student says it in a different way they get.
Group learning allows students to talk with peers. Instead of hearing primarily from the instructor, they get to hear about the thoughts of their friends. It also allows for the instructor to see where they may be having difficulties.
Absolutely & this also helps students learn to listen to others' opinions & viewpoints.
Ryan
It gives students the opportunity to learn from other people. It's good to listen and learn also to hear what others have to say.
I think it depends on how long the term is & what your end goal is for this group. There is value to keeping the same groups so students learn to build a team over time. There is also value to mixing them up so they have the opportunity to experience a variety of groups & dynamics.
Ryan
I agree. However, I am also curious. Do you keep the same group for the entire term or do you continually have random selection and thus have several groups and dynamics before the end of the term?
