technical courses and ELL

I believe that students being behind others in comprehension reduces the overall effectiveness of the course; it certainly slows down the pace and increases boredom in acheivers.

I think it is much better to recognize these issues; whether it is english as a second language, or poor reading at the appropriate level is a detriment to the overall class.

I believe this issues should be recognized early and in many cases referred to remedial study. I know this can be embarrasing to many "Phd's"; but, the overall intent is to ensure they perform and that the overall class is not held back for one individual.

Not too popular, I'm sure...

Talk about spelling "barley!!" sorry.

Back to the issue at hand, at the post secondary level there is not much that can be done. With title lV funding we admit anyone with the financing. All I do is reinforce the need for proper paperwork which includes English basics.

I wish there was more that could be done. You also have to be careful what you bring to the students attention or you will be accused of racism and all the nasties that go with it.

Not faulting K - 12 teachers, they deal with the cards given also but, at some point the education system needs to realize they are turning out uneducated people that do not know the value or meaning of accountability.

In a few cases, I've seen the same things you have mentioned. I think that you've identified a serious issue.

I'd like to understand your recommendations, or any actions taken, on improving this problem.

tks

The "quality" of students arriving to class is appalling. They have little desire to open the coursebook, they can barley spell their name and their writing is unreadable, even when printed! They fail to realize the importance of proper spelling, diction and legibility in the workplace. I realize many businesses are using electronic means for scribing but, you still need the reader to understand what you wrote.

I actually agree with you. In many cases, I have students are either deficient in math or verbal skills that really is disruptive to the class. In these cases I have them schedule time outside of class with tutors or myself to help them keep up with the pace of the majority of the class.
