Students with learning disabilities
Students with learning disabilities sometime require more time and patience than our average learner. As an instructor we must understand their situation and offer resources and help that they may need.
With the students that I have had in my class that had learning disabilities they were very open to letting me know what they needed. My school has a help line for our students and I have found them to end up being very productive students and very appreciative of our sensitivity to them.
In my experiences students with disabilities mainly need to know that you are sensitive to their needs.
I think that once the student is aware of your sensitivity and concern, then he/she will openly tell you what type of instructional supports will work most effectively for him/her.
Yes, I agree that often simply they need more time or a special accommodation such as the test questions read to them orally.
Definitely students with learning disabilities have the potential to learn and excel!

Sometimes even the simplest methods can be helpful, once we understand their situation. As an example, experiences with my nephew who has autism have shown that he can follow through on just a few out of a series of simple instructions in a row. With this knowledge, I can help him feel that he has successfully completed my requests by keeping the series very short.
