The greatest challange would be students not being their own advocate and coming forward and discussing with me their learning disability and what I can do to help them. Instead, they make excuses for missing homework or late work, they skip class during presentations, etc. Which might lead me to believe that they're not going to make it due to not being interested, or falling behind. With these students I usually figure it out pretty quickly, but sometimes, they get good at hiding it.
I think it is important to be attentive to the needs of people with learning disabilities. They will probably need more time but overall they can acceed expectations.
I would have to say the greatest challege in working with a learning with type of disability.
Then prepare the lecture and discussions for the course the student is enrolled in. I would provide a different lecture format for the student with the disability.
In dealing with the student with a disability the concept in patient with the student. The student mostly feel like their disability is a burden for the instructor.
In reality everyone have been exposed to some type of disabilities from students in their teaching profession.
Be supportive of the students make them feel welcome and part of the learning environment.
I have found that working with students with learning disablities makes you think out of the box, so to speak. Getting the student to understand can be a wonderful feeling, but the biggest challenge is having to adjust lectures and classwork to a slower pace.
Andrea,
this can be a challenge for all of us & the key is seek the help & assistance we need to help these students.

Becoming frustrated in yourself when you're unable to find a venue to teach the required information.
I've never worked with a student with learning disabilities. This year I will have one. He's 57 yo man with dyslexia. He's already told me about his disability and what can help him. I know it's going to be hard, but with his information and this class I believe we can do a good job in training him new skills. So far, the most challenging for me is to listen to him and keep him focused on what he trys to say. He's a very hard-workign person and deserve, as we all, the opportunity to get education and change his life.
I can honestly say recognizing what disability the student has and how to implement a plan of action to take on helping them.
The greatest challenge is how to effectively direct, teach or encourage student/teacher to work with the disability.
The greatest challenge is trying to help the students with disabilities that need more time, and you have a full class. the best thing you can do if you cant help them during class is to offer times before or after class to give them that extra help they need. Also as suggested in ED106 it helps to find out what has helped them in the past.
making sue the understand what your goal is for them. Making sure the understand the material in other ways. helping them comperhend the topic.
The greatest challenge for me is having to modify some lessons in order for them to understand.
In my previous experiences I found my greatest challenge has not been helping students with learning disabilities but making sure the student does not feel isolated because of their challenges and the class is supportive of helping this student succeed.
I would say the biggest challenge is getting them to talk about it. In the first few weeks of class, though, I like to ask EVERYONE in the class to list some challenges they have with school, reading, writing, etc. and what strategies they use. I offer my own personal challenges and strategies for success. This usually gets everyone feeling more at ease so they know they are not the only ones who struggle.
For me it is the time. I do not have much time during my class to do individual work so what I try to do is before class or after class see if they can come in early to descuss any issues or stay late it seems to work alright. After taking this course though I am going to make up some work packets that may help them out as well.
The greatest challenge would be making sure the student does not feel single out.
alwyn,
this is very true & we must remember that we are here for the benefit & the betterment of the students.

The greatest challenge is the patience; Instructors have to be aware that they have to make special accommodations for these students beyond the regular teaching delivery methods.
