Tracy,
this is a great point to highlight. Meeting their needs without preferential treatment is the way to help them & the rest of the class be successful.

Andrew,
this is a great approach & I think tied to this is making ourselves available & approachable so the students feel comfortable coming to us with any problems or struggles they have.

For me the biggest reward is seeing the look on a students face once they have learned something new.
Trying to meet their needs without showing preferential treatment. In additoin, trying to adjust the presented material to a method that works for them.

Getting into a rut, once you are settled having a student that requires something beyond what you have become accustom to can throw you for a loop. You need to put yourself in that students position striving to learn something that you just can't grasp on your own but have a severe passion for, empathy can really be a fantastic motivator in that case.
YES!!! I have had the some things happen. great advice>>>>
I think the hardest problem is getting students to speak up about their disability and/or ask for help. Some students may have even been diagnosed with a learning disability, but are shy about it and might try to "get by" without mentioning it. I try to combat this somewhat by frequently asking the class what they like/dislike about my instruction, and that I am always open to changing how the course is delivered based on their feedback.
As adult learners these students have worked with their disability throughout school (hopefully they were identified in elementary/middle school and provided with an IEP) and have acquired learning strategies to become a successful students. Working with these students, though, is sometimes the reverse as they get older, they don't want people to know they have a disability, maybe they did not learn as well as they thought they should have learned with the implemented learning strategies from their IEP, therefore, they are not willing to work those same strategies as soon as they graduate from high school. As a special educator, I find that allowing my adult learners the extra time without singling out anyone, an excellent learning platform. Extra time provides confidence!
Derrick ,
I would definitely agree that this seems to be the biggest challenge & we must try & make them as comfortable & "safe" as possible.

The hardest part is knowing that your student is struggling and obviously has a learning problem but you have not been told to modify your teaching techniques with the student untill the last 4 weeks of class. I makes me made because if I had the IEP sooner I could have made modifications and the student would not be failing my class. I have absolutlely no problem modifying the students work load.
The hardest part is identifying. I start to notice it when they take their first quiz, just by watching them. Also, by watching the clock because they usually need more time, and by their grades.
I think one of the most difficulty working with students with learning disabilities is trying to keep them from becoming frustrated when their having difficulties. I found my teaching this student at a slower pace it was easier for them to learn.
The greastest challenge is getting the student comfortable in the classroom were thy are ok with asking for help
Renee,
yes, while we fear any kind of labeling or diagnosis, sometimes this can be helpful as it helps students realize they are not stupid, but simply have a different way of learning.

I agree it is difficult workng with students with
reading deficiencies. I try to use visual aids to help them as well as hands on.
The greatest challenge is helping students that do not know they have a learning disability. Most students just think they are not good enough or that they are not smart enough to understand the material. When I go over the different techniques, they apply them and figure out which works best for them. It's challenging knowing that other instructors let these students move forward without informing them early on.
the greatest challenge is getting them to discuss the isability
Lima,
I agree that the more we can help those students who are struggling in an individual or small setting the better.
