When teaching anesthesia I will present a patient scenario and ask which anesthetic protocol would work best for this case. The students have already been taught which drugs are used where and when in previous lectures. I now want to see how they put it all together. I will also ask probing questions as to why they chose one drug over another.

IF a patient his holding their left lower abdomen, how would you list where their pain is located?

After discussing the use of metaphors in advertising (for Graphic Design), I often ask student to develop metaphors of their own for either existing products or services. Once they come up with one, the ideas cascade and usually they are disappointed when I tell them we need to move on. While they are answering the question, though, they have a lot of fun.

I teach accounting classes and explain the benefits of calculating accounting ratios which help the students interpret the financial information about the company data provided in the chapter. These ratio calculations help the students see how the business is performing. After the ratios are explained I then asked the following questions about the company data provided in the chapter:

•What is in this section is your business solvent?
•Is your business profitable?
•What is your return on assets?
•How is your business performing in key areas?

The students then have to use the application method in calculating the various ratios to find the solutions to the above questions and as a result the benefits of using ratios are reinforced.

Yingwei,

You are using questioning very effectively in your classes. Your students must certainly appreciate this.

I ask questions when we begin baking labs and practical work. I ask them questions that are related to the technique we are working on or the ingredients of the recipe. The questions reinforce information we have covered in homework, lecture etc and it lets the students see how that information directly relates to the product they will be making in the kitchen that day. After lab is complete we also discuss what we did, how to change it, what went well and what went wrong.

James,

Students enjoy application questions; it gives them some real life material.

After a student draws a floor plan, I will typically ask them how they would go about using orthographic projection to complete the elevations for the same structure. In my field I would say that we ask a lot of application questions. But I did not know there were so many different types. Because of that, I have found this class very helpful. Thank you.

Lance,

Good example. Do you have them role play these questions in class?

How do you adjust your massage session when working with clients with kyphosis, beginning with your initial interview through your exit interview?

Maureen,
