Benny,
Good job! Teachers should be very familiar with their topics before going into the classroom. It is important for us to understand all learning styles so that we can attempt to teach to them.
Judy Mohammed
Make sure you use open -ended questions ...no yes, no answers, make sure you choose many different students and different students each day to answer questions, and give the students time to answer before moving on.
I will explain to them to study on the subject matter. Then i would explain the different learning styles that people are receptive to. Then I would watch and critique a demo they are doing.
Scott,
This is wonderful. My belief is that students often know more than they believe they know, and I enjoy helping them to come up with the answers by asking questions.
Judy Mohammed
Patricia,
This is very good advice. Although we may know what we teach, textbooks vary and we expect our students to purchase these books at high prices. It is therefore our responsibility to use the textbooks and be totally familiar with them.
Judy Mohammed
While giving a lecture on electrical circuits, when a student asks questions about something I just said, I will respond whith a question going back to a previous lecture making them recall what was talked about. I will continue with questions leading up to the present question and lots of times they wind up answering their own question from the questions I ask them.
One thing the Instructor has to be on top of the game by reading the chapter prior to lecturing. I usually wait till next day to throw Q and As about the prior lecture. And I have mentor other instructors, but each instructor brings new ideas and motivation, and I just want to see what the new instructor can provide on their own on the first day. I usually remind instructors--do not sit down during class!! walk around --be interested.
Rose,
Good way to initiate the new teacher. Have you had opportunities to work with new teachers?
Judy Mohammed
I will review the types of questions that we discussed. I will also give examples of these ypes of questions, and I will have the new teacher observe my class where I implement these examples.
Patricia,
Very good technique! Keep up the good work.
Judy Mohammed
Vincent,
This is so true. We learn so much from listening to students, especially since many of them come with experience in their field. Wait time seems to be difficult for most instructors.
Judy Mohammed
I let them give me answer the next day. and do a short review of what was discussed.
Patricia,
This is good. Many times I give the students questions to research. Sometimes though, I run out of time.
Judy Mohammed
I have the students research the 'answer'. Sometimes, I do notice some students are not prepared for lecture. So when I do a little review just to see how much he or she have prepared in his or her assigned reading. SOme students just sit there, with blank looks and expect the answer to my questions. So instead, I have them research the answer, with a little more feedback on the question I have asked.
A little work on the student part--he or she can do it.
I like to inform the new instructor that asking questions not only benifits the class/students, it benifits them as well.
Ask a leading question about the subject matter to gain the students knowledge and retention skills.
Leave enough time for students to answer the question. I remind them that awkward silence for a few seconds is fine. This seems to be the biggest challenge for a new instructor to get through.
Gather as many answers from as many students as possible. Use their answers for discussion and scenarios. This can help reinforce the correct answer without calling out anyone as being wrong. I find that questioning helps keep the attention on the information and open up the floor for discussion.
Patricia,
I am a bit confused by your response. Are you saying that you should not ask the student to research the answer or that you should ask them to do so?
Judy Mohammed
Tim,
I can see that you like to keep it simple, as do I. I disclose most of my class expectations on the first day and repeat the necessary parts as needed.
Judy Mohammed
Jennifer,
This is true and the best way to make them comfortable is to give them the most information at the very beginning. I do so in writing and we read this in class together.
Judy Mohammed
Nydia,
Wait time is important. Can you think of other ways to advise new teachers?
Judy Mohammed
its important to give the student 3 second wait time before responding
