I believe that one of the most important components is the pre-recorded lecture. It must be interesting, lively, cogent, brief, and memorable. I have recorded excerpts of the Art Appreciation text for the students so that the course content can be heard on any of the portable devices and at any time. Students listen while they drive to class, listen on the train, share the pods with their family and friends, and prepare for each lecture as they have time and can review on the way to class. The segments are all about 14 minutes in length.

Robert,

I agree that student learning is most important. I also agree that it's our job as instructors to make the assignments and activities fun and innovative.

Flexibility and face to face components make the flipped classroom model work. Lectures may be done or before students come to class and group discussion and assessment can be done in class.

Increased classroom time, increased time with the student to discuss complex topics and work with students.Ability to review lecture in a recorded content as many times as the student wants or needs.

When they meet face to face with instructor and other students, because it gives the student confidence that they are on the same page.

I feel learning to utilize the computer is very important in today's workforce.

Classroom time to focus on assessing if the students are grasping the concepts

Good point Donald I agree that face to face has it's advantage. Non verbal communication is also a way to get your point across.

The face to face component is important because it allows you to find out what your students have learned.

The blending learning component is the most important. I believe the combination of technology and classroom activities increases student learning.

To allow students the opportunity to learn at their own pace.

Regardless of the methods, student learning and involvement is most important. If the process is innovative and fun, but does not enhance student learning, you should consider alternative methods.

F2F is very important. Using Blooms, we are only asking students to remember some components/concepts during their self paced process. The facilitation in the classroom to lead/drive the discussions gets them up the chart to understanding and applying.

Jeff,

You are correct. If instructors are not trained properly then student learning will be limited at best.

Dr. Moody Crews

I think well trained instructors are the most important component. If the instructors aren't trained to do it properly it could be disastrous.
Part of that training is to get "Buy-in" from the majority of faculty. If they don't believe that in it then it will show through to the students.

Angela,

Professional development is so very important. You are correct that making changes to the way we've always done things can be overwhelming.

Kanidrus ,

Very true. The idea here is that the face to face comes after students have had an opportunity to learn what they can on their own. This allows the instructor to help to student to go much deeper in their learning in the classroom.

Dr. Moody Crews

Sylinda,

Sounds like the two of you are agreeing with one another. I will add my agreement to the discussion.

Dr. Moody Crews

Quebec,

True. And the instructor can actually see what the students understand and the areas they may need additional help.

Dr. Moody Crews

Rhonda,

Your students may be reluctant to work on critical thinking skills because you may be the first person to ask them to do so. Good Job! Often students are not asked to think critically, they are just simply given the answers and expected to feed those answers back to us on an exam.
