Adult Learning Support
As an instructor i deal with adult learners on a daily basis that feel that are inadequate due to there age due to lack of detailed knowledge on new technology. I realized that when you compare the new technology to what they are used to and give an explain they mre willing to listen and accept your response as being correct
Hi Rich,
It is a great combination when you have a team composed of older and younger students working well with each other. The learning curve for all those involved is always a steep one because the level of sharing is so high.

I have been on both sides of this equation and do my best to help my adult students through the transition. I find that by pairing them up with younger students, both can learn much from each other. The younger student helps the older gain group acceptance and re-learn study habits. The older student often helps the younger with drive and ambition issues.
Hi Peter,
I agree. This is why teaching non-traditional students can be a challenge in terms of introducing them to technology while not scaring them away from the class.
Gary
I also believe that technology is also a large barrier to adult learners success. Many either are not aware of current technology that would be of benefit to them or are to afraid to use it.
Yes, I agree with you. I have found that relating current technology helps the non traditional students gain more self reliance and respect. They are just scared, like anyone who hasn't been in college for a while would be.
Kevin, First and foremost, I am an instructor but I also consider myself a lifelong adult learner as well. When I start class, I always looked towards the students that have the most life experience based on introduction discussion board postings and various e-mail exchanges before class begins. I always look to create a support network with my class and I then try to intermingle the highest life experience students with the least. I find this to be both beneficial to the adult lifelong learner and the newest student. They often work together hand-in-hand and provide the experience and share in their success.
I often help ease the fear of the students that seem to be most reserved in the aspect of technology by offering additional assistance and utilizing the assistance the university provides. Just this little extra effort pays off great dividends for students who are reserved and often too proud to ask for assistance.
