It gives you insitet into what dtudents are thinking
Student feedback is very important for me because I already know the material and have to adjust my teaching methods for each class. I have to find the bast way for each class to learn.I constantly ask for feedback throughout the class. If I wait for the end, it's too late to make adjustments for that group of students
This will tell me what my students have learned and what they need to focus on. This sometimes let's me know what to change in my presentation.
I use mini feedback questions at the end of hard lectures to assess the student learning. I try to make sure that I am teaching the way the students need.
I like receiving student feedback...it helps to keep me on my game and find ways of improving my methods. Every Class is different.
By providing individual and relevant feedback, we can not only chart a student's progress but also zero in on their needs individually as well as the needs of the class as a whole. If there is a misunderstanding across the board, it allows us to tweak our lesson plan to ensure that we successfully meet the terminal course objectives while providing our students with the knowledge and skills they need by meeting them at whatever level necessary for their success.
Hi Karen,
This is a great exercise for the students and beneficial to you as well. Thanks for sharing this strategy with us.
Gary
My students write in their journals for a class requirement. Not only does this improve their writing skills, but it allows me to understand how they are feeling about my class as well as the other classes they are taking that quarter.
I am always looking for ways to improve. One of the best ways is through student feedback. It is not about me it is and always have been about the students. I have over the last few weeks started by debriefing period at the end of each class. I also have a time just before finals where students can address there concerns as well as give feedback.
Each group of students requires a different approach and different instructional methods. Student feedback allows me to make sure that I am tailoring the class to suit their needs. It also creates a challenge for me during the quarter to 'live up to their expectations'. This helps to keep me focused on the task at hand and the reasons behind that task...which are the students.
To me this is an ongoing process through out the course. It is an important part of the learning, motivating and retaining process. It is also part of the continuing assesment necessary to keep things on track both for the instructor and the students.
Student feedback triggers my thought process and causes me to re-evaluate my methods of presenting subject material. Class material is pretty well structured as to what is required by sylabi, what we have the opportunity to really work on is the best way to present the material, so as to gain the best results for all.
By realigning the course, adding depth, altering methods or retaining what is really working. I request informal casual feedback every session by simply asking or reading non verbal cues.
Well said...Also, I always learn something that can help enhance the next class and/or confirm what I assumed was working,
Instructors are not robots or they shouldn't act as if they are robots. When you develop a lesson you should always have an alternate means of delivery based on the student group. Most of the adjustments you make should come from student feedbacks. Feedback is a students way of expressing their likes and dislikes in regards to your instruction delivery.
Student feedback helps keep me focused on the curriculum. It helps the istructor understand how much information the students are retaining and this in turn helps the instructor modify the curriculum accordingly.
Hi Jeffrey,
Right you are about how to handle feedback from students. It has to be looked at from a holistic perspective and that way we can grow each time we receive feedback be it positive or negative.
Gary
Student feedback is very important to me. It tells me if the students are learning what they need to be learning in that field of study. I can refocus in the areas needed.
It will only work if you listen to the students. Listen to what they are saying and why they are saying it. By doing so you can apply what they are indicating to you to the daily teachings and keep you focused on them. Don't take the feedback as a negative, take it as a positive, apply it and become more successful in the classroom. I am constantly asking for feedback, I want to make sure the educational experience is rewarding for the students, it possible.
Student feedback lets the instructor know if students feel he or she is coming across clearly or is confusing the students by wandering away from the objective topics. A teacher could be following a routine too much and not taking into account the make-up of a particular class. In other words, doing things by rote. I have found and corrected, I hope, an initial tendency to answer students' questions in a "pat" manner, sometimes starting to respond to a question, mentally at least, before the student had completed it. When I caught myself doing this, (the student feedback was being visibly unsatisfied with my response or asking the question over I made more of an effort to focus on the individual before me.
I make an effort to elicit student feedback throughout the course. Sometimes I will ask specific questions, sometimes a student who is having trouble will speak up and I will remedy the situation to fill the gap in my materials.
