Eugene,
Three great things to consider. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Gary

Dr. Gary Meers

1) Being excited and enthusiastic about the subject at hand.

2) Active participation in the student's learning process.

3) Sharing in the student's excitement in growth and improvement.

Mike,
Who are some of the people you observe and learn from?

Reading and learning from different people help me.

Gabriel,
Simple sequential learning growth is a powerful motivator. From your comments sounds like this is the approach you are using in your teaching. Keep up the good work.

Aprilan,
The idea of telling students that they are doing well in the course as well as where they need to work harder is a good one. Our culture is based upon telling people what they are doing wrong rather than giving encouragement. Keep up the good effort in this area.

Make sure that what ever the student task is,make it as simple as possible so he can build confidence and he will be happy to see that he can accomplish with easiness.

Effective Motivation Techniques:

Midway through the course I like to send an e-mail to the students who are passing just to say "congrats". For those students who are not passing I send them an e-mail reminding them that it is not too late and that their education is important for their success in life.

I try to use the sandwich effect when grading assignments the good, the bad and end with the good. Acknowledging what the students are doing right encourages them to continue to work at that standard. It also affirms that they are grasping the complicated concepts.

Robert,
They make it "real" for the students and this is so important to keep them engaged and focused on their career training.

Nevine,
Having a caring instructor is very important in keeping students in school. They need to know that a person in authority (you) wants them to be successful if they are willing to put forth the effort.

Effective motivating techniques that colleges use is life experience hands on learning, allowing students to reflect there past.

i found out many good tips at motivating students

first make them feel that you care too much about them, share with them any problems that can affect their progresion and try to find a way to help, offer extra credits to help improve their grades

Kathryn,
You are helping your students to build collateral in their futures with this approach. They need to see how something like this certification gives them an edge over other applicants. They are investing in themselves when they acquire these types of additional certificates and/or skill sets.

Florene,
So true about the role model need. By sharing the fact that you have been successful in a career prior to becoming an instructor you are showing your students that you understand what they are going through since you were once in their shoes.

One motivational technique I use to put in perspective why the students should strive for learning a topic.

We have Microsoft office Certification at our school and it optional whether the students take it. I try to stress the importance of it but explaining that they will competing with students from larger bigger name schools and by getting Certified by Microsoft it allows them to standout over these schools.

That is a great technique. I will have to use in the future.

Stacey, I can not agree with you more. Students seem to relate better when they hear that you have gone through some of the things they are about to or have already witnessed. It makes reality set in more than just ready the book.

I find that using my life and career experiences motivate my students to excel and to follow. Students need role models.
