I believe the positive reinforcement is the best motivation techniques a career college instructor can use. It not only helps with retention, it motivates the student to keep on learning and that he or she can accomplish the task at hand.

I learned that when students discuss their experiences the class discussion grows and soon several students will agree or disagree but the point is noted. This also motivates the quiet students to talk about their points of view.

Tim,
Well said. They need to be reminded over and over again of the end results. They have to see their future and when they do their motivation increases because they remember why they came to school in the first place.

Gayle,
Your ongoing experience in the field is so valuable for your students. You are bringing your most recent experiences to class and letting them know how the real world operates. This increases their engagement as well as helps to make your content even more real to them.

I find that one of the best motivators for students is to help them keep the end in mind. They came to school for a reason. Some for economic reasons, some to reinforce their current knowledge and some to find what they want to do, almost a process of elimination. The thing I always try to remember is they have placed one of their most important treasures in our hands, their future and I want to make sure that I keep them motivated to meet these dreams.

I continue to work in my field as well as teach, so when I come into class I have lots of new stories to tell, and will show case studies (HIPPA approved of course) of anything interesting I saw over the weekend. This is their favorite part , because it gives them a taste of what is to come.

Examples of effective motivation techniques are:
1.letting students know that what is being taught in the classroom is being practised on the job. Students should see the transferrability of their skills.
2.Reinforcing and rewarding positive behaviour by giving extra credit for difficult procedures that were completed successfully. For example: Innoculating and streaking a petri-dish.

Knowing your students and what motivates them can help me as an instructor stay in tune to the student. Help them see their progress with the material and help them apply what they are learning to their personal or professional situation.

Some techniques that I try to use include positive feedback in class, An assignment or small project that will give them an early success to keep them motivated, and the letter grade they earn can also be a motivator.

David,
Students really like these types of examples, stories and case studies don't they? They really perk up when the instructor starts to share such a story that supports the content that has just been shared. Helps to make the content relevant to them.

Adrienne,
You are being both an example as well as a model for your students. You are doing the same as what you ask of them. This is going to be true for them when they get out in their own work situation so they need to know how to jump in and get things done no matter how much effort is involved in completing the task.

I always use funny animated stories about past experiences that relate to are classroom topic.

I have a few ways to keep students motivated. I really like to share my own relevant experiences with students. Especially those stories that can be embarrassing or those where I did something wrong and learned from my mistakes. It really motivates them to keep moving forward and to realize that nt everyone is perfect. If you make amistake move on and learn from it. Another way I motivate students is that I will never ask them to do something that I wouldn't do myself. I teach cosmetology and as you can assume a salon building can get pretty filthy. Sanitation which is state board regulated is part of their grade, but I'm right along with them cleaning, up to my elbows in cut hairs and styling products. It really lets them know that I am not above them and that this is how it is going to be in the real world.

Tiffany,
Sharing these stories and experiences help them to see the value of the content being offered as well as helping them to see how what they are learning will help them in the future. This really helps with getting them engaged and focused on what is being taught.

Bridget,
These are fun instructors to listen to and learn from. I like to observe them as they help me with my own professional development.
