I believe in showing my students that I care. This gives them motivation to please me because I am in a position of authority. Students like to be recognized for their success and accomplishments.

Tell the students some past success stories from former students. This gives the students a "second wind" when they feel they cannot reach the end of the 26 mile marathon.

David,
This is a ROI situation. They see the return on their investment of time and money as a result of the applications and relevancy they are getting from being in the course.

There are many examples of various techniques used in the classroom but the real life examples are the most important. Instructors need to share their professional life experiences with the class. Once this is done, students will open up with their own experiences. Class participation will drastically increase.

I feel my students are most motivated when they believe they can apply the material they have learned to their own personal art/music.

Mario,
Students love these stories, as you well know that come from the field. These stories increase the value of the course content and their respect for you as an experienced person from the field.

Michael,
Good blend in terms of student recognition. We need to support their successes and shape their areas of needed improvement.

Joseph,
I have found the same thing so I work on both. What are strategies that you use to increase motivation?

I find that individual aswell as collective motivation is helpfull.

I incorporate on a collective and individual basis. It helps with the shy aswell as aggresive student.

Instill in them the confidence that they have the abilities to accomplish their task.

One motivational tool that I use is telling a story of my experience with some form of moral understanding. I will also give my students some form of purpose as to why they are taking my class.

We should encourage at all times. Quick to recognize success and slow, and careful on how we correct them.

Cynthia,
This is so important. They need to be reminded as to why they enrolled in college in the first place. Sometimes they forget their primary career goal and as a result start to slow down in their learning efforts.

Show how the knowledge they are learning relates the career goals they have for the program. Also, how the concepts relate to past experiences and knowledge.

Joshua,
Good point because they are in school to increase their ability to earn money. They need to see the value of the content they are receiving in relation to their income potential. If they make this connection then they increase their effort because the course moves them closer to their career goals.

Most classes i teach require a large amount of motivation to keep my younger students into lecture. I tend to use money a lot to keep them moving foward. If the information can make them successful they usally dont need much else to be motivated.

I have many but humor, insight, foresight, and stories of personal experience work best for me.

Adding material from experiences, in Your Field inculcate that with your Lecture, keep The Learning Fun this will keep students motivated and interested in The Subject matter.
