Student Retention

I find that when I get a new student I go out of my way to find out something about them, likes & dislikes. I try and get to know them & when I learn their personality I help them to take their strong points and apply it to their trade. I find it helps them to build their confidence because they had it in them all along.

Robin,
I agree for the reasons you state. The more we know about our students the more accurately we can plan our instructional delivery and provide support when needed.

I feel that it is ever so important to get to know your student. This assists you in using teaching strategies in the classroom. Instructors should have an inviting environment so that students can work on assignments and learn. The classroom must be condusive to learning, and knowing your student is just a bonus to teaching to the group.

I feel it is really important to connect with your students. When you have a connection they enjoy coming to class and learning. I like to make sure everyone is on the same page before moving and on and I change things up in class to make sure they stay interested.

Nicol,
This is such an important part of teaching. Your connection with your students earns their respect and this in turn helps to get them engaged in the learning process. When they know their instructor cares about them and their success they increase their efforts to succeed.
