Hi Matt,
Yes, you have it! As long as we live there are going to be challenges in life. We teach our students as we do ourselves that we deal with our challenges, and we move on.

Patricia Scales

Absolutely! Sometimme we have to open up and show them that problems can be solved and also that overcoming obstacles is a part of being a professional regardless of their chosen field of study.

Hi Cory,
Yes, the entire team working retention is so much more effective than a select few working retention.

Patricia Scales

The entire team, admissions, faculty and advisors must take active roles to keep students involved. The easy answer is to say that the instructors spend the most time with the students, and therefore should take the brunt of the burden. This neglects the fact that career services and admissions should continually check in with the students to let them know that there is an entire team there to suppor them.

Hi Neil,
Yes! The instructor certainly has a big role when it comes to retention. The instructor sells the students on coming back each day.

Patricia Scales

There are several players in the retention of the student. The faculty as a whole plays individual parts but the one key individual is the instructor. The student has the most and direct interaction with this/ these individuals. The relationship the student develops with the instructors is the bedrock of their educational experience. A good instructor on all levels will retain the most student body. Conversely a poor instructor (one who doesn't care) is a detriment to the student and the institution.

Hi Tiffany,
I concur! It is certainly a team effort to work retention. Everyone has to give total effort.

Patricia Scales

I believe it is ultimately a team process to keeping students in school. As an instructor, it is my duty to keep students motivated in learning and wanting to stay in school. But it is also the duty of admissions to do their part in finding students who truly are willing to be dedicated to the hard work to see the end result. Any department at the school that comes in contact with the student on a regular basis should help in the retention process.

Hi Timothy,
There are a ton of things to affect retention. Everyone has to do their due diligence to help increase retention. It takes an entire school to effectively work retention.

Patricia Scales

I have noticed that students"Would" like to stay in school. The problem arises when the institution is not clear in admission policies, graduation requirements and dates for graduation, externship policies, and finance issues.I hear these issues in class through out the term. I feel institutions must be transparent and expalin policies in a more adequate way. Another key players in student retention , are the instructors who can either motivate or discourage retention. Instructors who try to encourage self directed study-learning techniques
often find motivated students.Students and their
environment often hinder retention desires. Money issues, pregnancies, family relationships, and the student's own motivation.

Hi Peter,
You are right! Everyone plays a role when it comes to retention.

Patricia Scales

Hi Daniel,
You are on point! It takes the effort of everyone to help with retention. It takes a village to work retention effectively.

Patricia Scales

Hi Dave,
Yes, you have it! Everyone plays a role in retention. It takes the all personnel to help make retention work.

Patricia Scales

The Key players are everyone the student interacts with at the Institution. Obviously, the Instructors play a huge role as we are the primary 'face' of the school, but every department the student interacts with also needs to be aware that business dealings with the students can influence the students decision to stay or go.

All departments are responsible for student success, recruiting student services, financial aid and education. If all departments concentrate on making their students successful in achieving their dreams, retention will take care of itself.

I think that the instructor is key to retention, but I also think that it needs to be a team effort of all school personnel who will make contact with the student. What I find is that when one person gives different information than another the student loses trust in the institution. The loss of trust can cause the student to be skeptical of any information he or she receives from anyone, even the instructor. This can lead the student to question his decision on whether they made the right choice to attend this school, and choose to drop out. All school staff must be consistent in all means of contact with the student to maintain there confidence.

Hi Janet,
It takes an entire school to work retention. The chef/professor plays a large role, but it truly takes the effort of everyone.

Patricia Scales

Absolutely the chef or professor here. I visit the students as they progress from kitchen to kitchen to keep them interested and connected with

Hi James,
The instructor certainly has a BIG part in retention, but retention is really the job of all personnel.

Patricia Scales

it would be the instructors because they have the most contact with them and they also the ones that keep the students engaged in the class room and lab and keep them focused through out there time
