Juggling

I think there is always an issue of juggling unexpected tasks and those that are scheduled and sometimes unflexible. For example, the timing for teaching our classes versus the maintenance task that creap into the picture.

While we have some time after class, when there are only one or two instructors in a group that single phase, sometimes alot gets dumped on our plate, because double phasing instructors do not have time.

All too often I end up playing Fireman, abandoning the current task in favor of dealing with the unexpected "fire" that is burning more brightly. The end effect is that the day's plan ends up by the wayside.

Lucinda, So true. Our student expectations of themselves vary significantly. Some are diligent and on top of things. They want the best for themselves. Others don't seem to mind at all at having an average performance. As instructors, we've got to connect with each student, to learn more about where they are coming from and to learn more about the expectations they have of themselves.

I totally think that juggling everything as an instructor is the most difficult thing. As an instructor, I feel like I need to get everything done and my students expect it to be done now. Honestly, they do expect it to be done soon but they don't set as high as expectations as we set for ourselves.

Laura, So true. We really need to make sure that for every meeting, we have clear objectives. We also need to make sure that these objectives are communicated clearly to all meeting attendees. Otherwise, meetings can be a huge waste of time.

I agree. Too many meetings can be a waste of time. Especially when the time and dates are always changing. I believe, at times, meetings tend to take away time I could be using to spend with students who need extra help.

I agree these meetings are for info then send an e mail, otherwise accept what we all have to say during these meetings and don't label those who speak out meeting derailers.I think some of us need to feel like we can let loose some of our frustrations to others who work with us immediately to communicate to those who dont have good stress and time management it also lets others who you work with feel that they are not alone and can learn from the others we are so close to every day.

Meeting for meeting, all without value, complicate our daily work environment, the best laid plans and schedule can go out the window within seconds, Flexibility seems to be Key, tasks lists with priorities work well for me but not all can move with the curves.

Michael, So true. The students and their educational levels, as well as their motivations, can create unique stress experiences from class to class. Some classes are just easier to deal with when compared to others.

I also find we do juggle our schedules . Each class you teach has its own set of challenges. Some classes go very easy and others you may have students who are not grasping the subject matter,so you have to spend more time finding ways to get that student or students on the right track.

Christian, Yes, often times instructors feel like we are being drawn and quartered. With so many different people to serve (e.g., students, fellow faculty members, administrations), it sometimes feels challenging to keep up with everyone's demands.

Russell, So true. Training can either be very productive or unproductive. For each training seminar, I recommend making sure your instructor clearly articulates goals and objectives at the start of your face to face meetings. This can help orient everyone toward what you're hoping to accomplish and as a group, you'll find that you often drive toward those goals faster.

I agree with this statement, it is necessary to prioritize our tasks

I have had an order waiting to be placed for two weeks and keep putting it off for training and other things that have dead lines. "training" meetings are also another time waster. most information that neede given out can be done with E-mail.

I agree with your statement. It does seem overwhelming at times, especially when we are really busy. It seem as if we are being pulled in every direction. Based on what we have just read, if we prioritize ours tasks and determine which task is the most important and whichis the least important.
