Managing Time Between Classes
I find it is important to be ready for every class, but it is just as important to take a minute for myself between classes. I grab a snack or call home or check my email. Any five minute task that can center me a bit before heading back into the classroom can relieve the pressure.
Julie, Some of us have a real challenge finding private office space on our campuses. Often times, this is what we need to get away. When private space is limited, I recommend going to the campus library for a little downtime. Because it's customary to speak with low voices in a library, people tend to engage less then in other places on campus.

Breaks are hard when you never leave classroom or campus. Students find you with questions on studies and personal questions about their school situations. I find when I step away it does help and you feel refreshed and ready to go again.
Michele, So true. You can take a quick breather too. Even short periods of time away can make a dramatic difference.

I can relate to the need for a "breather". Time to regroup is very important.
Sounds great, however, most Culinary Instructors have no time between classes for breaks. The nature of the content can make some classes run longer due to class dynamics. After a while it is only normal for someone to develop stress.
Amanda, Nice! Some semesters our schedules work out in our favor. Other times we are not so lucky. It's a healthy approach to ask for what we want at the start of each semester. Sometimes, administrations can accommodate. Asking ahead can go a long way.

We have ten minute breaks every hour. I have found that if I check my phone or messages it creates anxiety. So, I wait until my morning class is over to tackle other tasks. I prefer to take the short breaks to close my eyes and prepare myself for the next hour. I find that focusing on the next step of my day helps keep me moving and keeps my mind from wondering on other things I need to do.
I am very lucky. I have a 5 hour beak between classes. That is usually when I get to exercise and eat, or catch up on sleep!
Darren, That sounds like a very healthy approach, yet most instructors don't take the time like you. Taking a minute for yourself can do wonders because when you are centered, you are in a better place to help others.

I also find it necessary to have a little me time at breaks or between classes. I don't know if it's good time management, however it helps me regroup and re-energize. I step away from the students for a bit too and I don't worry about emails or my cell phone...just me, a snack and a breather away from it all.
