Grading

Hello,
The assessment is the greatest feedback that an instructor can give. Scores hold little redeemable value.

You are correct- sometimes students get so involved in an actual"grade" they are loosing what is is about. Assessing product or knowledge is an important tool- helping an instuctor to visiably see what knowledge the student is retaining, thus giving a student feedback on his work individually gives them true value and answers to why something is done correctly or incorrectly.

This is true Melody. We must strike a balance and provide the appropriate level of feedback. Too much can be as bad as too little.

I agree that feedback is important when grading so that the student understands why they recieved a particular score. However caution should be used not to overly disect the papers and balance them with positive statements as well which can be very tricky.

I also believe this is true in the short and long run. We will hopefully help the student understand our expectations for future work: assignments, projects, tests etc. This feedback will also be what they probably remember most. I try to carefully write feedback that the student can actually use in the future.

I agree with you I keep score and I give feet back to alls my student to discuss there grades

I whole heartedly agree with you. Scores are a must but shouldn't be the end all. I always tell my student that as an instructor I keep score on thier progress and use that to help them find their weak areas and together we can work to improve on them.

Scores hold little reedeemable value, until you don't get enough of them and you cannot reedeem them for a diploma. But I see what you mean, I often tell my students that we give them practical tests not to punish them, but to assess their abilities and create an opportunity for dialogue. It tends to take some of the pressure off. I also let them know that I am on their side, and want them to succeed, and that testing is a learning proces that can help them grow as professionals.

I agree with you on this point. Assessement and feedback are by far more valuable than a grade. but at the same time, a grade is a way to measure the performance of a student and create a base of comparison that goes beyond the small environment of the school.
