Grading

When grading task it is important to be consistent and fair. I find that the grading process is the more time consuming than preparing a lesson plan. I suppose it should be. I find that some student can provide more information in fewer words than others can. I am looking for a method that I can consistently use to ensure I am being fair in grading; especially with providing feedback to the student. I would appreciate any help and/or suggestions.

I really like your approach Sarah. It's important that students structure their verbal responses with high points in mind, as well as a thesis to support their points.

When I am grading something where students could really vary in the length of their response, I make a list of essential points that must be included to answer the question. Some students can get the information across completely and concisely in a few sentences, whereas others may require a couple paragraphs.

I check to see that students have addressed these points and that is what my grading is based on. (I hope that helps).
