grading
i teach my students about honesty. i have them help me by grading(of course i check them) fellow students papers. they have to use a red pen and write the correct answer, comes in handly for studing for that exam. also it makes it easy for me to get the grades on the spread sheet in a timely manner.
I agree some students don't like to have their scores known to the class. I have even had ones that score very well and want to keep it to themselves.
did you ever have issues with students cheating for another?
Is this only applicable with multiple choice? It seems like it could get messy with essay questions.
I have tried that approach before, I got alot of negative feedback from some student. Some students are so private that they do not want anyone knowing what they make. One solution to this is before each exam assign each student a number and place that number on the exam. Change these up each time so other students dont realize whose exams they have. That way the other students will grade fairly, because they don't know if is their friend or foe that they are grading for.
I do the same. I grade all my students papers and exams. When handing back the graded papers I tell the students that they don't need to discuss their grades with the other students, it is up to them. There have been times that I will meet with each student separately and discuss their graded paper or exam with them.
Confidentiality is really important in grading Lise. If you'd like your students to grad each others' papers but are worried about maintaining confidentiality, you might try assigning them unique student numbers and asking them to record those numbers on their exams instead of their names.
I agree with you Michele. I grade my own exams, quizzes, evaluations, whatever. And I hand them back to the student with it face down or folded over. That way, if the student wants to share it with another student they can, but if they do not, they can keep the exam results to themselves.
I understand that having the students help grade papers does give you some time management and also gives the instructor a break, but what about confidentiality? If a student is not doing well and scores low on a test, he or she might be too embarassed to know that his classmates knows what they received on a test. I always grade my own tests.
Wow, sounds like a lot of responsibility Michele. If at all possible, I'd recommend task delegation. I know that's not always possible within the educational context.
I grade all the exam myself. i use my personal time to be able to have it on the spread sheet on time.
