Glad to hear you feel like you are on the right track John. Sometimes a little affirmation can come in handy. But do try to incorporate new things every once in a while. You never know where they will take you and could be in a positive direction.
Actually, it kind of reinforced what I am doing now. Some of my exams include lab work, which during lecture I put emphasis on certain things to report during their work.
I have trained myself to look for these key reports to see if and measure how they are understanding the material and its importance.
However, everytime I learn something new, I try it here and there to see if actually makes my world spin easier.
I find it is extememly important to tailor the evaluation, so the results prove the comprehension of the class. Being very specific about grading requirements and giving specific feedback, is also helpful in assessing students progress.
That's a tough one Scott. Some administrations do set very strict guidelines for how work will be completed. If these guidelines aren't working for you, it's important to make suggestions for organizational change.
I have a process that is dictated by the education department and cannot be changed.
I already apply many of the named techniques in this module. The following is a list of what I do.
Syllabus contains daily lesson plan.
Daily lesson plan has outline for sutdents to follow and take notes.
A mixture of physical aids.
Pre-set power point shows with recorded narrative
Weekly handout packets ( not page by page )
tests include
Oops we are having a fire alarm now. got to go
Recently, we have streamlined a few of our graded tasks, not only to make them easier to grade, but to make it easier for the students to accomplish thoses tasks.
Yes, go ahead and give this a try Stephen. It's a huge time saver to use short answer. What's nice about going from essay to short answer is you don't lose the ability to test student recall.
I will consider developing a short answer exam instead of our long essay.
What a world of difference that must make Luis. When an institution changes its' grading procedures so dramatically, it can make a big difference on instructors. At the same time, expectations change. Often times, there is an expectation for greater efficiency and that can be the one challenge.
Interesting mix Ronald. Sounds like you've found a way to have the best of both worlds. Half of your grading is quick and streamlined. The other deeply tests knowledge. You've built in efficiency without sacrificing course rigor.
Corrently 50% of the grading process is e.g.b. based with multipe choice tests and the other 50% is task based which the student need to discribe what they have seen or done which can be time consumeing.
When I first started to work at UTI there were paper grade books which took lots of time to do grading. We now have electronic grade books and it makes grading a snap.
I would definitely use the multiple choice format illustrated. It seems to be a good way to make the exam easier to grade, and also a good way to direct students to check their answers.
That's a great method Stan. It sounds like you don't have a scantron machine in your institution but I really love the way you're partly doing leveraging this technique with the overlay. I think it's great to think about creative solutions when working with low budgets.
I use multiple choice and true/false questions for testing. The answer sheets are scantron type and I score it with an overlay sheet.
my grading system is easy and efficiant
By using the computer and using the software that some of the text books have I have made study guides and test from test banks. I am also making sure that my tests are on scantrons for easy grading. I have also prepared all my handouts a few days before the first day of class to elevates stress about making photo copies.
Based on what I have learned in this module, I will format my exams and homework 50% using the computer and make test easy to grade without losing integrity of the test. I will design homework students can turn in online only to avoid paper handling and I can grade the papers anywhere I can get online.
I already set my class up so my students can submit everything online and they do their tests and exams that way as well. This give them instant feedback. One thing I do for assignments is that I grade everything that is dur for the day at the same time. If a student does not have something in on time they get a 0. It is up to them to notify me they turned it in and then once a week I go in and grade those.
