Not Enough Time

I think this time of season is particularly stressful due to the additional obligations many of us have. It is much harder to find any quiet time at work or at home.

Meisha,

I did that last year, and it really helped me a lot. With a family and a lot of other responsibilities, it was nearly impossible to keep teaching. So, I took five weeks off; in other words, I didn't teach for one session. This year, however, we could not financially afford to do so. I have found that the stress has really not been worth the money. My kids are very upset with me; I feel my work hasn't been my best; and I have had health problems.

Thanks,
Rebekah Garrett

I am trying to get better about saying no to a lot of things. Most of the time I feel like it won't get done unless I do it. I am learning to delegate more.

Learning to say no to additional work is indeed an important time management skill Lisa. I, like you, am still practicing this skill.

David,
That is a good suggestion. Cutting back on your class load can be helpful. It is hard to work and contribute your best when you have family home for the holiday. I also try to work hard before they get there so that I can get most of my work done ahead of time.

It is hard to find quiet time during the holidays. It becomes more of a challenge when teaching. You have to deal with students putting off their assignments to the last minute. This really cut into your private time. I am trying to develop a plan that will help me have more quality time. I have to learn how to stop taking on so many additional activities.

That sounds like a great plan Meisha. Taking a break from one stressful task can help you deal with all the rest during the holiday stress season.

Hello David,

I totally agree with your comments. The holiday season can bring on extra added stress into our lives. This session, I decided to take a break from teaching to help cope with the holiday stress. It has really helped! I can see other instructors running around the office with a stressful look on their face.
