Stress
I have found that when students score bad on a quiz, that i stress a bit. the first thought is what did i do wrong? What do i do so that it doesn't happen again?
That's certainly one way to handle it Patricia. To a certain extent, students are responsible for themselves. On the other hand, it's nice when instructors can give students a little motivation and encouragement.
I have decided not to take ownership of a students performance. They are responsible for their own learning, i.e. reading assignments, taking notes in class, getting off of FaceBook in time to study for quizzes and tests.
I feel much the same way, so I'm always looking for a different approach to present my material
Good to hear you keep such a careful eye on your assessments Beth. it's so important to watch how well students are doing, how well we are supporting their needs and to adjust accordingly.
I agree that it's difficult for us not to own that issue, at least in part--especially since we got into teaching to educate (hopefully). It helps me to look at percentages: if most of the class scored OK on a test or assignment, then I suspect that it's not my teaching per say, so I offer each of those students an opportunity to review or discuss their issues. If the majority don't do well, I look at my method of teaching the subject and review the topic with the class and address any issues. I also consider allowing them to retake the test or the assignment. Finally, I adjust my method for teaching the topic next term.
Sounds like you really take ownership over their education. That's wonderful to hear. But their success is in part tied to their own efforts. We can only do so much for our students. They have to do a little too.
