stress eliminator
With the introduction of ebooks, I make sure to have a copy of a good book with me at all times. Reading a chapter or two will help eliminate stress.
Speaking of the reset button, I find that going down and talking to other co-workers on my 10 minute breaks helps a great deal. Sometimes I just need to be around other people that understand what I am dealing with.
Karen, Thank goodness for modern technology! When one educational medium doesn't work, I recommend switching to find the alternatives. There are lots of formats available to those who search for them.

I have an eye condition that has made reading books difficult. The eBooks are a life saver and I am again able to read, a passtime I love
Don't want to sound crazy, but I found that shooting firearms after a stressful day is a great way to relieve stress and refocus the brain on something else. It allows you to blow off some steam and forces one to harness their thought and focus on things like proper breathing, mental control on your target, smooth fine motor skills while squeezing off the trigger and then the sweet release of a big bang and flying target after you squeeze your round off. Archery works very well for me too when I cannot get out to shoot one of my guns. Anything to focus your mind on something else for while works well for me.
Jeff, Interesting to hear a healthy habit was born out of an unhealthy one. Great to know the smoking lead to something good. Yes, taking a step back can make a major difference. Sometimes we just need to press the reset button.

When I get stressed out, I make a point to leave the area and go for a walk. I learned this when I was quitting smoking years ago. If I can remove myself from the source if only for a few minutes, it helps to shift focus on something else.
During times of peak stress, I too will escape for a few minutes during a break, with a good short read or the "jumble" from the newspaper. I seem to "re-up" my stress-tolerance-top-level set-point. A quick decompression and things are back in perspective.
