Maintaining a family as a career instructor

A career school instructor actually has more flexibilty to get things done it's just planning your day

Jean, Balancing work with an infant is tough, particularly with early mornings. Delegating the childcare responsibility can be the hardest thing too. It's nice to hear you have flexibility on your weekends. Perhaps you could lobby to change your morning hours in the future.

I agree that being a career school instructor offers a nice Monday-Friday schedule, which is great for me, because having been a chef for the past 13 years, weekends off was unheard of.

Now that I can work Monday through Friday that really frees up time and gives me a clear idea of how to plan my time. I think that is something the general population (of Mon-Fri workers) take for granted.

However, my schedule begins at 6am! I need to be at work by 4:30 or 5am every day! That is difficult. Especially having a child. My son is 2 years old. Next yer he will go to pre-school and the idea of hiring an early morning nanny just to take him to school is STRESSING ME OUT!

The crazy hours are something that I have a hard time dealing with.

But all in all, it's not so bad. Like I said, Mon-Fri is a blessing. I will take the stress of the weird hours.

One of my students in the clinic asked me the other day how I stay so cheerful and never seem to be stressed out. I have my fair share of life's stress. I suppose to her I am relaxed, but I'm not the one trying to complete the program with so much pressure on me. It's important not to let the stress the students feel become contagious. And even more important to help them manage their stress. Health care workers should be able to perform well under pressure and stay calm and focused. I practice daily gratitude.

Antonette, That sounds like a tough spot. It's hard because you are experiencing stress from multiple roles in life. I'm sure the last thing you like is when stress from one area of life bleeds into another. Sometimes it's important to take a quick break to regroup when you are feeling very stressed. Even just two quick minutes can really help you press the reset button.

It is really hard to be an instructor, a mother and wife. It is very stressful. Once I get frustrated with my student I got frustated with my kids also., I am trying to handle everything.
