Properly managing the classroom enviornment

The most challenging component in proprietary colleges is being able to engage the students. As educators we have to find a happy medium which incorporates a conducive learning enviornment for our students.

Module 1 talks about being able to bring balance between being a subject matter expert and a instructional delivery expert. Our students need to know and understand fully the course content and how it relates to the career path. Once they see the importance classroom control is easier.

Part of managing adults is mutual respect and accountability. I get a good response from my students when they know that I resepct them, and expect the same from them toward me. When I do not treat them like children, I do not have issue managing their behavior in class, they manage it for me.

Hi Paul,
Absolutely! We have to sell our courses so that students can see the full benefits of them. Once students realize there are benefits, their attitude changes for the better. Continue to do a good job selling the "management" courses!

I teach "management" subjects at a career school. Students are drawn to a career school because they get to do things, not just sit in a class room. I find industry related stories and activities that get the students out of the chair or telling their stories helps to keep the students engaged. Especially when it is a subject they do not see as directly important to their career objectives. As one of the posts in this area says, we have to be salespeople to make sure the student sees how a related class applies to thier career goals.

Hello Miles,
Have you ever had students that did not take advantage of getting information ahead of time, and if so how did you handle the student.
Patricia

Hello David,
You mentioned some great points that carry beyond just mere teaching. Even beyond teaching so that we can properly manage the classroom, we also have to let out students know that they can trust us, they can confide in us, we must demonstrate that we have their best interest at heart so that they can be successful.
Patricia

I agree that teaching is more than lectures, exams and handng out assignment. Teaching includes managing the process so learning occurs. It starts with the instructor getting to know his or her class to understand the diversity in the classroom, their learning styles and challenges.

I believe part of the management process involves periodic assessment to determine whether learning is occuring. This can be in the form of Q&A, time for discussion and students' feedback. However, result oriented management should be used to insure course objectives are realized.

I definitely give my students information ahead ot time. I find that it helps with their understanding and preparation for the course.

Hi Said,
Do you typically give your students information ahead of time? If not, are you going to start doing so?
Patricia

I agree with Jose. the more information you give the students beforehand typically contribute to their success at a higher level.

Hi Jose,
What a great way on reviewing materials and selling your students on coming back the next day. You use such smart tactics to make your students want to keep coming back.
Patricia

I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE INSTRUCTOR TO KEEP THE STUDENTS FOCUS AND HAVE THIER FULL ATTENTION BY REVIEWING THE PREVIOUS DAY'S CLASS CONTENT AT THE BEGUINING OF THE CURRENT CLASS AND GIVING A PREVIEW OF THE NEXT DAY'S CLASS AT THE END OF THE DAY'S CLASS.

Hi Katrina,
What an awesome response! I tell my students instructors must be the best salespeople around because each day we have to sell our students on coming back the next day.
