Late Work

I agree with the text that late work should have points taken off, but I'm not sure that the recommendations are stringent enough. I feel that a significant portion of their points should be taken off that same day to discourage the behavior. If too much time is given for make-up and not enough points, the student will take the easy way out.

Life does happen, and I think late assignments can be accepted on rare occassions with a good reason. But in general, allowing late assignments creates an environment where the student is guaranteed to fail when they are consistently one step behind. In my experience, most students will put off assigments until they are forced to hand them in and they often appreciate (albeit after the fact) being forced to keep up.

Hi John,
You understand because you are a student presently. I understand as well because I was a student at one point too!

Okay I have a little problem. I work at a school that is a trade career and the students need to learn all the items that we give them. So when we have students with late work, that is if we actually have a project, we need to be able to receive it even if we take off points. Missing work can bring a student down and not be able to learn the next skill for our trade. I'm a student right now myself and sometime life in the outside world happens so you just need that extra day.

I agree there should be no excuse for the assignments not being turned in on time. When they are on the job their boss will not put up late assignments.

Hi Suzanne,
I emphasize the importance of a calendar for every class. I let my students know that things need to be written down and followed upon. I tell my students any version of Microsoft Word or the internet will allow them to print a calendar. They do not need to purchase a calendar. My most successful students are those who live by their calendar.

I find that with the type of students we have, most of them have not completed a school project. A lot of them dropped out of high school and obtained a GED after. They do not understand that it must be turned in by a specific date and then if it isn't turned in on time and points are deducted, it seems that everyone is scrambling to complete the project. It is posted on the daily objectives on the board everyday, it is discussed in great length before the deadline and yet I find they still tell me that they didn't know it was due! As a result, we spend a great amount of time making sure everyone knows the date the project is due.

If the student has a calendar showing when assignments are due, there should be no reason for work to be turned in late. I do remind my students about upcoming assignments. I also do not make it a habit of accepting assignments early.

I agree, when work is due it is due. I try to remind students that I do accept assignments early, and especially if they will not be there on the due date.

It my thought that a primary pupose of getting your education is to prepare you for the real world. You should hold your student to the up most responsbilitiy so that they may be successful in life. For this reason, I stronlgy disagree with taking late work.

I agree I had a student last week that wanted to not turn in a paper when it was due because the missed points were only 10 points. He was sitting at his desk not doing anything on the day it was due after I gave students study time for the final to be given the next day. He turned it in that day do to a choice I gave him, but because of this I changed my policy for the next MOD.
