Motivating for Successful Learning & Possible Extra Credit

There are times when I have distributed a learning activity when they return from break/lunch based on our discussion prior to going on break/lunch. I give them a specific time frame (10-15 minutes depending on the length) to complete the activity for some possible extra credit points depending on the difficulty of the activity. Those students who do not come back from break/lunch on time also can participate in the activity, however, they have lost minutes because they were not back from break on time. I have found since beginning this, the students tend to come back from break or lunch on time as they do not know when/if there may be an opportunity for extra credit.

Wow..great idea..on time "Quiz" for those students who earned as well as hard working students. Have to try it. thanks

Hi Danielle,
I am not a big fan of extra credit. To ensure my students are comprehending various topics, I give a reinforcement assignments based on the topics covered as a grade.

I have been using extra credit quizzes in my class that consist of a question or two. These questions are usually on the main concept I focus on in class and help both the student and myself see if they are understanding the topics that I am covering. This is a great tool for us, since it can be utilized before test time.

I used this same idea for late arrivals in the morning. I called it my "on time quiz". It was a review of the previous days lesson. It served two purposes, it got my students to class on time and also gave me some insight into how much material was obsorbed and retained from the previous days lesson.

This is a great idea. Overall, what are your feelings on extra credit assignments? I tend to feel that they may be over-utilized and unfairly reward or bump a student up that may not have a true concept of the work assigned. How can I balance this with rewarding some students that may deserve the extra credit assignments?
