having had been in the military for 20 years, and having taught many adult classes, i feel geetting student buy in is very important...they need to feel you are listening to them as people and to any problem they bring associated with the lessons ( hopefully giving them an anwser to these problems helps too). Eye to eye contact and giving them all a chance to have a say will help them feel this way.

I think giving them examples of how doing well and knowing the material will set them apart in eyes of a potential employer makes it personal and helps get that student "buy in".
But you have to be honest and real with them or they will see right through it.
