Keeping it real
I find by keeping everything real by explaining how the classroom is operated is a real eye opener to our students. I always explain in detail how things are in the real workforce and what employers are looking when hiring new employees in the kitchen. I feel that it's imparative to lay down the law on day one while going into great detail on the expectations in the classroom.

Hi Jose,
Absolutely! We must have patience with our students. Time in the beginning produces better results for the end!
Patricia
I agree 100%. As i teach too i am always tring to explain to my students some of the real world to my class. Letting them know i still am holding back from what they ame see in there jobs. but still tring to let them understand its not all fun time.
Taking that extra time in the begining to set up the expectations helps student understand what is expected of them and usually results in fewer headaches in the end.
Hi Gilbert,
Nicely responded to! Students need to know that in the real world things are not sugar coated and performance is everything. We must be honest with our students good or bad.
Patricia
Yes setting the tone and explaining the expectations gives students a better perpective of the challenges in the course.A great motivator is the comparison of working to meet those expectations will be just as usefull in the real world where performance means everything.
Hi Paul,
The instructor must be in full control at all times. Classroom management is a MUST!
Patricia
I agree this is a neccesity or the class will have no control other than from the students.
I agree , our goal here is to get the students ready to out in the real world and be successful and the only way is to bring reality to them and to make them start feeling responsible for everything that they do as far as work and attendance .
I found that providing real life examples is critical in students understanding course content and being able to apply what they have learned in class. I teach a basic business class (fundamentals) and business ethics class. Each week I ask students to bring examples from either their workplace or a current event. We have had great discussions (especially in business ethics!)by just reading the newspaper.
I believe that when students can see and relate to the content they "buy in" and become motivated learners.
Glen,
I completely agree with you. I find it is helpful to inform the students that they will have to apply critical thinking both in the classroom and then later in the workforce.
Glenn,
I think when things are placed in perspective for students, that yes, it is a real eye opener. Most people always want to find relevance in what they are learning. To apply the real world "techniques" are one of the critical applications one has to use in their work life.
I agree i feel that students should be aware and know what is expected of them prior to going into the workforce.
I totally agree with you. If the stage is not set on day one, you will have problems.Georgeann
