Them that can DO - others teach
This is a statement I hear alot. What you need to do is respond before the question is asked.
Myself it has to do with my age and having led a very active life (13 operations to repair broken bones, etc.) and can no longer work at the pace I'm used to.
I love teaching and although I could make more money DOING, I prefer to do this. Seeing the students succeed, seeing them from entrance to graduation, is worth more than the money. I make sure my students know that this is what I love and that is why I choose to do it instead of DOING as they are planning to do.
In a profession such as nursing, I don't believe you can understand or bring as much to the classroom unless you worked in a clinical setting before. I still work one day a week in a clinical setting to keep my skills up, as well as keep connected to current practice. I came into the teaching arena because I have good nursing practice and I want to help others learn good skills. I also want to help student's focus on the important role they play. It's not just a job but you ae touching a life. That's an exciting perspective. I teach because I can do.

I see your point! I love teachers like yourself that have years of practical experience that can be shared with students. Students love to hear interesting stories that are applicable to the lesson. Thank you for bringing practical experience in the classroom; our students need it.

Most people teach a subject that they are interested in and have a well-established teaching method based on past experiences in the field. Just because a teacher is not currently working in their chosen field does not mean that they cannot DO. Teachers have a wide variety of reasons why they are not currently in the field and would prefer to teach the subject. As a certified court reporting instructor I have gained valuable information from receiving the CRI certification. I also use valuable information from the past as a deposition reporter. Keeping current in the field is very relevant. To keep current, the teacher can consult with working reporters.
