I issue a daily attendance grade and a class participation grade as motivation to make every class. If attendance is a major problem with a particular student I try to find out what may be going on to cause this and what we may be able to do to help them solve the issue.
I use two techniques that seem to work quite well.
First, I attempt to communicate the value in regular steady attendance... the return on investment... the students are in the process of making an investment in their future by getting the MAX out of their educational experience. The more deposits (attendance) they make, the more their return will be..
Secondly, future employees will not tolerate inconsistent attendance at work. I attempt to engage the student in developing good attendance habits.
Hi Ally,
Gas is expensive, you bet as educators we really should make the gas money worth it. I like your response.

Debbie,
All of which Patricia said is definitely helpful.
For me, I access the students to identify what would give them a reason to come to class?
This may be different for every student, but make the gas money worth it.

Hi Debbie,
1) I lead by example
2) I am always in class on time
3) I am prepared
4) I am knowledgeable
5) I give pop quizzes on the hour that are not allowed to be made up
6) I issue an attendance grade at the end of the grading period
7) I also issue a participation grade at the end of the grading period
8) I issue perfect attendance certificates
9) I offer the incentive if you have BOTH an A average and perfect attendance, you can be exempt from the final exam
10) I enforce the college's attendance policy, if a student has more than 8 hours of missed time, the student is withdrawn from the course
