I believe that time management is something we all have a bit of an issue with from time to time. A little patienece and understanding from both sides is needed.

Yes I agree to a point, we all have those days of stuggling with time. In most cases it the same student that are late or absence,I feel that the teacher has to take all accounts into consideration. Your actions or dismissal will effect your other students.

We do need to take the time to question our students. Most of our students, simply do not know how to problem solve whenever issues arise.

I agree with you, Ms. Barnett. I take the time to personally question student who are having issues with attendence and most issues are due to personal issues and/or circumstances beyond their control. It's a matter of discretion on how to respond to the excuses.

I concur! At my institution, instructors must call students in their 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.classes who did not call in. You should want to know what's going on with your students.

We need to be patient to a certain extent, but there has to be consequences. Participation points cannot be earned if the student is not in class. However, if that student is able to keep up with the course content and earns passing scores on assignments and exams, attendance alone should not cause them to fail the coarse.
I believe when an instructor takes the time to find out why a student is late or absent, the teacher learns that much more about the learner. However, sometimes the excuses are questionable or unexcused regardless of the reason. As educators, should we not use our better judgement about absences/tardiness? After all, we are not the employers, but the educators.
They wont be patient, thats the problem. I feel attendance at school should be as it will be in the field.
Every one has issues outside of class,When a student is absent take the time to find out why?
Yes patience, especially with online students who work all day and support families. Course standards should be adapted to their schedules.
