Hi Kevin,
I am not a big fan of accepting late work. In the workplace, the boss is not going to put up with turning in projects, paper work, etc. late.
Patricia

Hi Patrick,
I hear you, but I do not believe in sacrificing standards to save a student. In the real world their boss is not going to be tolerant of late projects/assignments.
Patricia

Our students have a lot going on in there lives. The change in environment that comes with relocating for school can be a big distraction as well. Providing a little extra time for a student in need can make the difference between a student quiting or staying with the program.

I am a barber instructor and on Tuesdays we set aside the entire morning for students to get their work done. We also have clinical sheets that they must accomplish before the end of the business day in order to receive credit. If they finish on Tuesday they receive extra credit towards the completion of credits required by the state to graduate. However if they don't complete their task then they don't receive credit for anything other than just turning the clinical in. I think if it is a day late then we should give them partial credit. I just don't agree with the students not receiving any credit but I guess they should use that as motivation to handle their business.

I too accept late work, with a 10 point penalty, if it's handed in the next day the class meet. If it's more than two classes late then goes to 50% off the totaled earned. This is my way to motivate the students to complete their work in a more timely fashion.

Hi George,
Exactly! Deadlines are made to be adhered to, not broken. In the real world there are harsh punishments for not meeting your boss' deadline.
TERMINATION if too many times...
Patricia

Easy, a due date is a due date. Late work or assignments slow down progress, and many will always look to take advantage of late policy. The student understands that there are consequences for their actions. And, will not be fully rewarded for their efforts.

Hi George,
How did you derive at the 89%?
Patricia

I do accept late work, with a five day limit and the highest grade that can be earned is 89%.

I do accept late work, with a 20% late penalty. However after this term, I will have to consider instituting a time limit for late work being eligible for credit...perhaps at the end of the respective unit in which the work was assigned. There has to be some limit.
