class room management
I think some students need to be told how they are doing so they can see where they are at in the class
I will let the student know their grade level at each class setting after a quiz or exam. It seem to give them confidence and also let them know if they need some tutoring for further understanding. The student appear very accepting to this process and everyone know the process so anxiety is less in the classroom setting.
Hi Dustin,
It really is helpful for those who are not doing well. I've seen where this practice have helped many students "pull it off."

This is actually what we do as well. We give them a "mid-mod" grade report, the develope a learning plan for them if need be. It really seems to help give life to some drowning students.
I agree that letting students know the grade they have earned (as early on as possible in the course) saves multiple headaches down the line. At my institution we have an online gradebook where students can access their grades as soon as I've input them. I actually ask students to stay after class so we can look at them together if I'm concerned about a specific student. I'll do this as early as week 3.
I agree. Students do need to know how they are doing in class. This will help them to know if they are on track or not.
Hi Joy,
It is a super idea to let your students know their grade at midpoint. At my institution it is a policy that if any student has a C or below average, the instructor is to inform he or she of thier grade point average; I inform all of my students of their grade point average at midpoint regardless of their grade. I encourage the students that they have just as much time to turn their grade around to a higher grade, if they are unsatisfy with their current grade.

Gary:
I think this is a good idea. I recently took for granted that students were tracking their own grades throughout the class. (The syllabus defined how much each assignment/test were worth for the overall grade.)
This assumption resulted in a mini-meltdown of my students right before the final because so many thought they were doing poorly. I calculated the final grades to date and all were doing better than they thought.
I think it might be a good idea to let students know their overall grade so far at some point throughout the course. Maybe halfway through or a couple weeks before the final?
Is this what you are referring to?
