LATE ASSIGNMENTS

I am a stickler for late assignments. I teach night classes and realize most of my students have full time jobs.
Should I be more easy going about late homework?

Hi David,
You need to come up with a rule about late assignments. Some instructors do not accept late assignments, other instructors deduct points every day the assignment is late up to a certain number of days being late. You may want to have your students summarize the chapter, perhaps this will force them to do better reading.

I have little problem with students handing in exercises on time but they seldom will read the assigned pages. Any suggestions?

Hi Trevor,
Great way to be fair to everyone! Students tend to become less stressed whenever they know that the lowest grade will be dropped. Life happens with everyone.

I maintain a no make-up work policy, but I allow my students to drop their lowest homework grade. I feel this gives the students a chance to handle an unexpected crisis situation that may arise during the term, and it keeps me from having to decide which situations merit acceptance of late assignments and which situations do not. I am very concerned that I may make a judgment call that isn't fair to all students. This policy prevents me from having to make such judgment calls.

Hi William,
What constitutes for the program director to give a student special permission to make up work? I think it is a great idea, but I would like to find out the guidelines. I can see how this makes for a smoother flow.

Hi James,
That's right! We really are not doing our students any favors by being lenient on them.

I feel a no make up policy is the way to go. The students are going to have job assignments in their chosen career and not getting the job done on time will have consequences too.

Ask yourself what objective you have for the assignment. If it is to assess their learning, then you are really after getting the assignment so you can assess their learning. The only dilemma if it is late is that you, as instructor, have less time to help the student if remedial work is in order.

We are fortunate because our School has a "no make up work" policy. The only way to get an exception is by making an appointment with the program director. It really has helped keep the staff consistent.

i dont think you should because they cant have things done late at work

I agree no matter te shift all students shold be held accountable. if you are lenient with one shift, the other shifts wuld expect the some, consistency is the key

I agree with Patricia, you should have the same expectations for night students as you do the daytime students. Otherwise students turn it into "favoritism"

Hi Joseph,
I do not think you should be any easier on the night students. Rules are in place for everyone.
